The battle for the top spot in the English Premier League 2025/2026 is entering its hottest phase as the year draws to a close. Arsenal has reclaimed the top position, with Manchester City closely trailing behind. Meanwhile, Aston Villa has emerged as a serious dark horse in the title race.

All this unfolded during a packed weekend of fixtures that reshaped the top of the table.

Arsenal Returns to the Summit

Arsenal regained the lead in the English Premier League 2025/2026 Standings after defeating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 at Emirates Stadium, London, on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

The Gunners took over the top spot from Manchester City, who had previously held pole position after securing three points against hosts Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal's two goals came from Martin Odegaard in the 14th minute and an own goal by Brighton striker Georginio Rutter in the 52nd minute. Brighton's lone consolation was scored by Diego Gomez in the 64th minute.

This victory reinstated Arsenal as league leaders while maintaining their momentum amid intense pressure from their closest rivals.

Manchester City Keeps Chasing

Manchester City ensured continued pressure on Arsenal. In an earlier match, City kept pace by defeating Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead through Tijjani Reijnders in the 48th minute. However, Forest leveled the score six minutes later when Omari Hutchinson found the net.

Pep Guardiola's side ultimately secured victory in the 83rd minute through Rayan Cherki's goal. With these three points, The Citizens accumulated 40 points to remain second in the standings.

This narrow margin leaves Arsenal no room for error, as City trails by just two points.

Aston Villa Disrupts Title Landscape

While Arsenal and City remain primary favorites, Aston Villa has transformed into a serious contender.

Aston Villa defeated hosts Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League's Boxing Day fixture in the early hours of Sunday, December 28, 2025 WIB. This marked their 11th consecutive victory across all competitions.

Substitute striker Ollie Watkins became Villa's hero at Stamford Bridge, coming off the bench in the 58th minute to score twice (63', 84'). Chelsea's goal was netted by Joao Pedro in the 37th minute.

This result keeps Aston Villa third in the provisional standings with 39 points from 18 matches. Villa now trails second-placed Manchester City by one point and leaders Arsenal by three points.

With such a tight gap, Villa has evolved from surprise package to genuine threat.

Liverpool Breaks into Top Four

Meanwhile, Liverpool advanced in the upper-tier competition. They maintained momentum by defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Anfield Stadium.

The Reds took the lead through Ryan Gravenberch in the 41st minute. Florian Wirtz doubled their advantage just one minute later. Wolves only managed to reduce the deficit in the 51st minute through Santiago Bueno.

This victory propelled Liverpool to fourth place in the standings, displacing Chelsea with 32 points from 18 matches.
