Sharp scrutiny accompanied the hosting of the BWF World Tour Super 750 India Open 2026 in New Delhi. Behind the elite competition of world Badminton, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) acknowledged environmental quality challenges during the tournament at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex on January 13-18.
In its official statement on Friday, BWF cited seasonal factors as the main challenge. Smog frequently enveloped New Delhi, and cold temperatures were deemed to directly impact Air Quality and the temperature inside the competition arena throughout the tournament week.
This situation drew widespread attention, both from athletes and international media. In response, BWF stated it had engaged in intensive communication with players and participating teams to directly review venue conditions, following various inputs received during the championship.

"We acknowledge challenges related to seasonal conditions, including Air Quality and temperature within the venue," stated the BWF.
Despite facing these constraints, BWF emphasized that the overall evaluation results still showed progress.
The Indira Gandhi Sports Complex was assessed to have significant improvements compared to the previous venue, KD Jadhav Stadium, particularly in terms of infrastructure supporting a Super 750 level tournament.
Besides air quality issues, BWF also noted several support aspects that required attention, such as cleanliness and sanitation.
However, the federation stated that these issues were promptly addressed by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) as the local organizer.
Amid criticism, several players actually gave positive feedback on facility improvements.
The quality of courts and playing surfaces, training facilities, and medical services were said to have progressed compared to previous editions.
BWF added that all feedback during the India Open 2026 would serve as crucial evaluation material for refining the organization of the next championship at the same venue.
This is vital considering the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex is also scheduled to host the BWF World Championships in August, when weather conditions are expected to be more favorable.
In closing, BWF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and high-quality competition environment for athletes and officials.
The federation stated it would continue collaborating with BAI to implement continuous improvements, ensuring global Badminton Tournament standards are maintained amidst local condition challenges.
