Portugal National Team secured a vital 2-1 victory over Chile in an international friendly match held at Estadio Nacional do Jamor on Sunday, 7 June 2026. This result serves as valuable preparation for the Selecao das Quinas ahead of their campaign at the 2026 World Cup.
Portugal's two winning goals were scored by Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes. Meanwhile, Chile only managed to pull one goal back through Lucas Cepeda during second half stoppage time.
This match was also marred by a heated incident that resulted in two red cards just before half time. Portugal's Rafael Leao and Chile's Ivan Roman were both sent off the pitch following a confrontation between the pair.

Right from the opening whistle, Portugal immediately took the initiative to attack. The first chance fell to Ruben Dias, who met a cross with a dangerous headed effort. However, Chilean goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux reacted quickly to deny the opportunity.
Shortly afterwards, Portugal threatened once again through Rafael Leao. Started with a clever backheel pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, Leao broke through the opposition defence before unleashing a strike that unfortunately only crashed against the goalpost.
Despite being under constant pressure, Chile displayed fairly solid defensive organisation throughout the first half. The away side managed to make it difficult for Portugal to create clear cut chances inside the penalty area.
In the 35th minute, Portugal briefly celebrated after Cristiano Ronaldo found the back of the net following a pass from Bruno Fernandes. However, the referee disallowed the goal as the captain had already been in an offside position.
Ronaldo got another opportunity just a few minutes later from a free kick situation. Unfortunately, his shot struck the Chilean defensive wall.
Towards the end of the first half, tensions in the match rose sharply. The incident began when Ivan Roman made a heavy tackle on Joao Cancelo. This situation sparked a scuffle between players that involved both Rafael Leao and Roman.
After consulting with his assistants and reviewing the incident, the referee ultimately issued red cards to both players. As a result, both Portugal and Chile had to continue the match with 10 players each on the pitch.
Entering the second half, manager Roberto Martinez made a substitution that proved to be very effective. Goncalo Guedes came on to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, and immediately made a huge impact on his team's performance.
In the 57th minute, Guedes finally broke the deadlock. Capitalising on a through ball from Ruben Neves, the forward fired an accurate low finish into the bottom corner of the goal, putting Portugal 1-0 ahead.
This lead gave Portugal even more confidence to control the match. They continued to build wave after wave of attacks to put pressure on Chile's backline.
The second goal finally arrived in the 75th minute. Starting from a fast counter attack led by Francisco Conceicao, the ball was played out to Bruno Fernandes just outside the penalty box. The Manchester United midfielder unleashed a powerful shot that Lawrence Vigouroux could not reach, making the score 2-0.
Portugal actually had further chances to extend their lead late in the game. Joao Felix initiated an attack from midfield before playing the ball through to Pedro Neto, but Neto could not place his final effort on target.
Chile finally managed to pull a goal back during injury time. Substitute Lucas Cepeda found the back of the net with a left footed strike that took a deflection off Ruben Neves before crossing the line into Portugal's goal.
Despite conceding that late goal, Portugal successfully held on to their lead until the final whistle. This 2-1 victory is a positive result for Roberto Martinez's squad, who will play one final friendly match against Nigeria before commencing their 2026 World Cup campaign.
