Persija Jakarta will announce their new head coach to replace Mauricio Souza on Monday, 8 June 2026. South Korean former Indonesia National Team Head Coach Shin Tae-yong is widely tipped to become the new architect for the Kemayoran Tigers ahead of the upcoming competitive season. Bringing in this ex-National Team Coach is a major move made by Persija management as part of efforts to improve the club's performance.

The appointment of Shin Tae-yong is considered a strategic decision for Persija. Despite finishing in the upper league standings last season, the team's performance was still deemed to not fully meet the expectations of both supporters and management, especially after the club signed a number of quality players.

Shin Tae-yong's arrival is expected to establish a stronger distinct playing identity, while also restoring Persija as one of the top title contenders.

Football observer Haris Pardede, known publicly as Bung Harpa, stated via his YouTube channel that Persija's decision to appoint Shin Tae-yong will have been made with very clear, calculated considerations.

"This is interesting. There will absolutely be careful calculations behind Shin Tae-yong's appointment, this is not just driven purely by the Kemayoran Tigers' ambition to roar back to success," he said.

One notable element of Shin Tae-yong joining Persija is the potential reunion with multiple players who were his key trusted players during his time leading the Indonesia National Team. Players already very familiar with Shin Tae-yong include Rizky Ridho, Rio Fahmi, Doni Tri Pamungkas, Witan Sulaeman, and Fajar Faturrahman.

This existing rapport between Shin Tae-yong and these players is believed will simplify the adaptation process, should Persija carry out squad restructuring ahead of the new season.

"We all know Shin Tae-yong is not a coach that can be easily dictated to. It will be very interesting to observe how player recruitment is handled going forward," Bung Harpa explained.

Alongside his proven track record of improving team performance, Shin Tae-yong also has an established reputation as a coach who willingly gives opportunities to young players. During his tenure with the Indonesia National Team, he successfully developed many talents that now form the backbone of the Garuda Squad.

This characteristic is considered well suited for Persija, who currently have a number of promising young players in their ranks. Shin Tae-yong's arrival is expected to accelerate the development of these young players, while maintaining squad balance alongside experienced senior players.

From a tactical perspective, Shin Tae-yong is known as a disciplined coach with a flexible playing approach. While leading the Indonesia National Team, he repeatedly implemented strategies prioritising solid defensive organisation and fast counter-attacks.

However, given the quality of players currently available at Persija, it will be fascinating to see how Shin Tae-yong builds a more aggressive, possession-dominant playing philosophy for the side.

Competition in the upcoming Super League season is also predicted to be significantly tougher. Rival clubs including Dewa United, Borneo FC, and Persib Bandung have been actively strengthening their squads through the transfer market.

This situation means Persija requires a head coach capable of delivering immediate positive impact, while also building long-term foundations for the club.

If he is able to maximise the quality of the existing squad and receive full support from management, Shin Tae-yong has a strong chance to return Persija to the title race and establish them as one of the leading forces in Indonesian Football for the coming season.
