Lionel Messi is once again the center of attention in Argentina's journey to the 2026 World Cup. La Albiceleste secured qualification as the top of the South American zone qualifying Standings. Messi's name remains etched as one of the main engines behind that success.
Messi scored eight goals throughout the qualifying phase and helped Argentina maintain consistent performance until successfully securing a ticket to the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
However, behind that huge contribution, the captain chose to take an unusual stance for a superstar. He does not want to force himself if his presence could potentially become a burden for the team.

In an interview with Spanish media SPORT in November 2025, Messi acknowledged How special the World Cup is, especially after helping Argentina win in Qatar 2022.
“Yes, of course. It's a very special World Cup. Playing with the national team in major official tournaments always means a lot, especially considering how important the World Cup — particularly after we managed to win it,” Messi stated, as reported by Goal.com.
However, the 38-year-old player stressed that the physical factor would be the main determinant, not just romance.
He chose to assess his condition gradually leading up to June 2026 and did not want to give a definite promise about his participation.
In addition, he continued, the rhythm of the Major League Soccer (MLS) competition with Inter Miami presents a different challenge compared to the European Football calendar.
“We will have preseason with a few matches leading up to the World Cup, and we will see how it progresses day by day to see my fitness to be at the level I want and be able to participate,” Messi said.
At 38 years old, Messi has given Argentina everything, including a title that was awaited for decades. Now, he is no longer chasing new history, but honesty with himself.
He will only return to the world's biggest stage if he is truly sure he can still help, not just as a symbol.
