The 2026 World Cup is predicted to lose some of its magical shine if Lionel Messi does not play for the Argentinian national team. The 38-year-old superstar still leaves open the possibility of playing in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"I hope to be there (2026 World Cup). I've said it before, I really want to go. At the very least, even if I don't play, I will be there watching live in the stadium. The World Cup is special for everyone, for every country, especially for us, because we experienced it in a truly different way," Messi said, quoted by ESPN on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

That statement immediately sparked both enthusiasm and anxiety. Without Messi, the World Cup risks losing its most iconic figure of this decade. The player who changes the rhythm of the game, the stadium atmosphere, and even the global narrative every time he touches the ball.

In the same interview, Messi confirmed he will not participate in the Finalissima against Spain. This match could have potentially pitted him against Barcelona wonderkid, Lamine Yamal.

That decision raises even bigger questions about how long the maestro will remain at the highest level.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was previously the center of all narratives during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His magical performance led Argentina to become tournament champions. That title completed his collection of trophies and solidified his status as one of the greatest players of all time.

Currently, Messi plays for Inter Miami, the 2025 MLS Cup finalists. He acknowledges that the MLS schedule, which only resumes in spring 2026 after a long winter break, could potentially disrupt his physical rhythm heading into the World Cup.

Nevertheless, signals of retirement from the national team have never truly emerged. Messi instead emphasized that communication with coach Lionel Scaloni remains intense.

"We've talked about it a lot. He (Scaloni) understands my situation very well, and we've discussed it many times. He always says he wants me there, in whatever role. We have a huge mutual trust, so we can talk about anything," he revealed.

The emotional and tactical relationship between Messi and Scaloni keeps the chance of the Albiceleste captain playing open.

His presence at the 2026 World Cup would not only be a gift for Argentinian fans but also for the world of football, which has grown accustomed to seeing the maestro turn matches into artistic stages.

Without Messi, the biggest tournament on the planet is certain to feel blander. With Messi, the World Cup regains its center of gravity; everything becomes more alive.
