Lionel Messi has once again captured global attention. Not for a magical goal or new trophy, but due to his astronomical compensation and chaotic visit to India. The GOAT India Tour, touted as a celebration of the World Football megastar, ended in turmoil.

Lionel Messi received nearly 100 crore Indian Rupees (approximately IDR 187 billion) before tax deductions as compensation for his four-day visit to India.

According to PTI, Satardru Dutta told the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe alleged mismanagement of the GOAT India Tour that Messi didn't receive the full amount.

"Lionel Messi was paid 89 crore Rupees for the tour, while 11 crore Rupees were paid as taxes to the Indian government," the statement read.

The report also revealed the funding structure for bringing Messi: 30% from sponsors and another 30% from ticket sales.

What Happened at the GOAT India Tour?

The GOAT India Tour 2025 featured Messi alongside his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul. The Kolkata event was scheduled for four hours starting at 09:00 local time.

Messi and his teammates arrived at Salt Lake Stadium under heavy police security, accompanied by West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, organizer Satadru Dutta, Mohun Bagan officials Srinjoy Bose, and Debasish Dutta.

Chaos erupted when Messi circled the field to greet spectators. Police struggled to control the crowd pushing forward. Due to the turmoil, Messi canceled a training clinic for children from across West Bengal districts and left the stadium early for security reasons.

This decision intensified public disappointment. Spectators stormed the field, threw water bottles, tore posters, and damaged stadium seats. Many expressed anger having paid Rs.20,000 for tickets to watch the event.

For Messi, the GOAT India Tour should have been part of a global Football icon's agenda. For India, it's now remembered as an expensive lesson in managing mega-scale Sports events.(The Star)
