Arsenal closed 2025 with a resounding victory and earned the status of leaders in the Premier League Standings. This position feels familiar, yet carries a major question: can The Gunners turn their mid-season dominance into a title by season's end?
Hosting Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium early Wednesday morning WIB, December 31, 2025, Arsenal demonstrated dominance through pressing and ball possession.
Their pressure yielded two goals within less than 10 minutes. Gabriel Magalhaes opened the scoring before Martin Zubimendi doubled the lead.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus then compounded Villa's misery, solidifying a 4-0 scoreline for The Gunners. Villa only managed a consolation goal through Ollie Watkins during injury time.
This victory proved especially impressive as it came against an in-form opponent. Villa arrived in London riding an 11-match winning streak but were rendered helpless by Arsenal's second-half dominance.
The additional three points placed Arsenal atop the Premier League Standings with 45 points from 19 matches. They now hold a five-point lead over nearest rival Manchester City, who face Sunderland on January 1, 2026.
This win cemented Arsenal's position as year-end league leaders. It marks the seventh time Arsenal have finished a calendar year leading the Premier League Standings – matching achievements by Liverpool and Manchester United.
Past Statistics Cast a Dark Shadow
In each of the last four seasons where they led at mid-season, Arsenal ultimately failed to become Premier League Champions.
This occurred consecutively in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons. Both times, Arsenal were overtaken by the same rival: Manchester City.
Hence, despite their "mid-season champions" status, many doubt Arsenal's ability to finish as champions. The crucial question remains: will this season be different?
Mikel Arteta stressed his team's current focus lies entirely on the process, not merely the table position. He called 2025 an extraordinary year both personally and professionally.
"I enjoy working with the players, club, and staff here. Everything is exceptional. We know our 2026 targets. We must keep working hard daily, and I believe we're on the right path," Arteta told BBC Sport.
Optimism is further bolstered by Arsenal's performance in other competitions. The Gunners have secured a Carabao Cup Semifinal spot and advanced to the Champions League Round of 16. This indicates Arteta's squad maintains consistency across multiple fronts.
Arsenal aren't merely chasing individual victories. They're pursuing something greater – proving this season isn't just about leading at mid-season, but enduring until the final whistle.
The mid-season has been won. Now comes the tougher challenge: transforming this summit into the Champion's crown.
