The Indonesian women's team secured their spot in the final of the badminton event at the 2025 SEA Games after edging out their classic rivals, Malaysia, with a tight 3-2 score. This high-stakes showdown took place at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University Rangsit Campus, Bangkok, on Monday night, December 8, 2025, and only found a winner in the fifth match.
Mutiara Ayu Puspita became the deciding factor for Merah Putih (Red and White) after delivering a calm performance in the crucial match against Siti Zulaikha. Under immense pressure, the young women's singles player managed to win the match 21-18, 21-16, sending Indonesia through to the final.
"The key to this win was my desire to uphold the trust placed in me to play in the fifth match. Besides, Zulaikha and I are the same age, so there was pride at stake not wanting to lose," said Mutiara after the match.

Convincing Start But Faced Pressure
Indonesia opened the semi-final duel with a dominant performance. Putri Kusuma Wardani led Merah Putih with a convincing 21-9, 21-10 win over Karupathevan Letshanaa. This advantage provided positive momentum, but Malaysia quickly responded in the second match.
The women's doubles pair Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum had to acknowledge the superiority of Pearly Tan/Muralitharan Thinaah in a rubber game battle, losing 14-21, 21-17, 16-21. The score became 1-1 and the match tension escalated.
Malaysia then capitalized on this pressure. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who was expected to add a point, surprisingly succumbed to Wong Ling Ching 20-22, 21-15, 16-21. This situation put Indonesia behind 1-2 and under pressure.
Women's Doubles Revive Hope
In this critical situation, the pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari delivered an impressive performance. They gave no room to the Malaysian pair Go Pei Kee/Toh Ee Wei, winning easily 21-10, 21-9. This result revived Indonesia's chances and leveled the score at 2-2.
The deciding match then belonged to Mutiara. The burden was on her shoulders, but the young player showed maturity in her game. She maintained her rhythm, avoided rushing, and capitalized on her opponent's mistakes to secure the victory.
"When playing in the last match, I just focused on upholding the trust from the coach and the team," was Mutiara's narrative in the internal briefing before the match, which was part of her preparation.
Facing Thailand in the Final
In the final match, Indonesia will face the host country, Thailand, who previously won convincingly 3-0 over Singapore. Thailand is known for having a deep and balanced squad, especially in the singles sector, so the final duel is predicted to be tight.
Nevertheless, Indonesia's performance in the semi-final showed they possess the mental toughness to handle pressure.
"We are all committed to giving our best and maintaining focus until the end," a motivational phrase from the coaching staff not spoken directly to the media, but reflecting the atmosphere in the locker room before the decisive match.
With solid performance and a player composition finding its peak rhythm again, Indonesia still holds a great chance to maintain the gold tradition in the SEA Games women's team event.
