New findings from the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) reveal compelling insights into how travelers, particularly Gen Z, are reshaping their life priorities. Data from a survey of over 34 million GHA DISCOVERY members shows young generations view travel as a fundamental part of their identity rather than just a brief escape from routine.

Per a Hotelsmag report dated Saturday, December 6, 2025, 65% of respondents see travel as a reflection of themselves.

This trend peaks among Gen Z, with half prioritizing vacations over career achievements.

This perspective signals a major shift: younger generations seek slower, more personal, and meaningful lives beyond professional pressures that burdened earlier generations.

“Our study depicts travelers as wiser and value-oriented,” stated GHA EVP of Strategy Kristi Gole.

The survey predicts travelers will average six leisure trips versus four business trips by 2026.

About 50% expect increased vacation frequency, led by Gen Z and Millennials.

Meanwhile, Baby Boomers prefer fewer but longer holidays, prioritizing depth and tranquility.

Wanderlust is rising, with 62% choosing destinations they’ve never visited.

Safety, comfort, and cultural immersion are key priorities, especially for Gen Z craving local authenticity.

Slower travel gains momentum as 60% target small towns or rural areas.

Spending grows more deliberate—79% will pay more for premium service quality.

Though luxury definitions evolve, 78% still consider boutique or five-star hotels irreplaceable standards.

“Hotel quality is non-negotiable,” Gole emphasized.

Loyalty programs evolve: room upgrades, early check-in, and perks matter most to 44% of respondents. 73% would subscribe to travel services for added convenience.

Technology integrates deeply into travel—six in ten now use AI tools for planning (Gen Z leads adoption).

Digital payments, smart keys, and biometric boarding transition from innovations to essentials.

Asia dominates 2026 destination interest: Japan tops dream destinations, followed by China and Thailand.

Travel inspiration diversifies but remains driven by family/friends (36%) and social media like Instagram (34%).

“Loyalty isn’t just points—it’s a lifestyle, a unique experience at every stop,” concluded Gole.
