Sharp criticism is directed at Marc Marquez at the start of MotoGP 2026 after failing to finish again in the fourth round at Jerez. This result isn't just a number, but a signal that the defending Champion is facing significant challenges in retaining his title this season.
The race at the Spanish Grand Prix was supposed to be a comeback moment, but instead failed to provide answers. The home track, expected to reflect his true strength, only extended the questions surrounding Marquez's performance.
In terms of the Standings, the situation is not ideal. After four rounds, Marquez is 44 points behind the championship leader, Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia. This gap is substantial for the early stage of the season, especially for a defending champion.

Looking back, situations like this rarely end well for Marquez. In his career, Marquez has experienced similar circumstances twice while in peak physical condition, both times resulting in no championship title.
The 2026 season feels like a contrast to his best years. No podium in the first four main races – a situation last seen in 2023 when he was hampered by Injury. Ironically, while now fit, this performance has repeated itself.
Whereas in his championship seasons, Marquez always showed dominance from the start. In 2014, he swept four consecutive wins. In other seasons, he was at least consistently on the podium or winning from the opening round.
This season paints a different picture. He has only finished in two main races, with his best result being fourth in Brazil, without a single podium. This inconsistency is a serious alarm in the title fight.
Two Main Factors Under Scrutiny
The Ducati GP26 motorcycle used by Marquez hasn't yet fully instilled confidence. Ducati's updates at Jerez failed to deliver a significant impact.
On the other hand, physical factors also play a crucial role. The shoulder injury suffered last season is still affecting his racing approach.
He even admitted to being more cautious and avoiding big risks when facing potential Crashes.
This situation was also noted by other riders like Pedro Acosta. He feels Marquez's current condition is unusual compared to his past performances.
Ironically, the same bike proved competitive when ridden by Alex Marquez in Jerez. This shows the bike's potential exists, but hasn't yet been fully maximized by the defending champion.
Meanwhile, Bezzecchi is consistent with three wins and one second place, establishing him as the new benchmark this season.
A stark contrast is visible between the two, especially in main race performance.
The upcoming rounds at Le Mans, Barcelona, and Mugello will be decisive. Fast circuits like Mugello could potentially put more strain on Marquez's physical condition.
With the season calendar still long, the opportunity isn't closed yet. However, the current performance trend indicates that Marquez's path to defending his title will not be easy.
