In many cultures, holidays are synonymous with returning home, bringing families together, or exploring new places with loved ones. However, new research reveals a far more complex and surprising picture. It turns out the ideal vacation journey isn't always with family. The question is, if not family, then with whom?

A study from Edith Cowan University (ECU) explored what the perfect trip actually looks like. The research didn't just focus on location, duration, or activities, but primarily on one rarely questioned variable: who we spend the holiday with.

Head of ECU's School of Business and Law Tourism Research Centre, Professor Huang, explained the research stemmed from a social phenomenon in China called "Dazi," a trend where young people seek travel companions online, often strangers with shared travel goals.

"With the advent of social media, access to travel companions has transcended traditional kinship and social circles. Increasingly, young travelers tend to form temporary relationships with strangers who share similar travel purposes through online travel communities," Professor Huang stated, quoted from the official ECU website.

This explanation reveals one crucial point: the ideal journey can heavily depend on relationship quality, not biological closeness.

Traveling Together Isn't Just Safer But More Meaningful

In its findings, the ECU research emphasized that traveling with someone leads to a higher quality experience. Interaction, emotional support, and a sense of security become crucial factors.

However, Professor Huang cautioned that the key isn't just having anyone, but finding a compatible travel companion.

A compatible companion can reduce friction and conflict. These two things often arise even in the most harmonious families.

Long journeys, tight schedules, food choices, and even morning wake-up times can test anyone's character.

Characteristics of the Ideal Travel Companion According to the Research

Professor Huang stressed that compatibility in character and habits is very important.

"Travel companions with broad experience and diligence can be chosen. Because, with their experience, they are more likely to overcome obstacles on the road and cooperate effectively," he said.

Additionally, aligning budgets and destination preferences is also important. So are lifestyle habits ranging from sleep patterns and eating styles to exploration rhythms.

Harmony in these small things will create a smoother journey with more positive and higher-quality interactions.

Travel Companions Aren't Always Family

The research does not promote being "anti-family" but rather explains the dynamics of personal needs.

"For those needing emotional support, the best travel companion is someone of the same gender who is sensitive and meticulous, as these traits foster harmonious interaction and understanding," advised Professor Huang.

Meanwhile, for those prioritizing simplicity and effectiveness, such as planning or problem-solving, an opposite-gender partner can offer perspective and diversity.

"This research absolutely does not suggest you shouldn't travel with your spouse, or even in-laws. However, the advice is that if you do travel with family, make sure to set some goals and expectations before packing," he concluded.

In other words, the ideal journey isn't just about who you're with, but who best aligns with your goals and needs during the holiday.
