2025 could be called one of the busiest phases for Indonesian travelers. Destinations are increasingly crowded, new hotels are popping up, and local events feel alive again. This isn't a coincidence. There's a major push from the government making the domestic tourism world run faster than ever before.
Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that foreign tourist visits during September 2025 reached 1.39 million visits, growing 9.04 percent compared to last year. A figure showing Indonesia isn't just back as a choice for global tourists but truly starting to shine as a leading Asian destination.
"The Ministry of Tourism is optimistic that with the current growth trend, the number of foreign tourist visits will exceed 14 to 15 million visits, in line with the updated 2025 Government Work Plan (RKP)," said Widiyanti.

This optimism isn't without reason. Based on the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) report, total foreign tourist visits from January to September reached 11.43 million, up 10.22 percent compared to the same period in 2024. ASEAN tourists dominated with 35.22 percent, followed by other Asian tourists at 27.57 percent.
From a traveler's perspective, this data explains one thing: Indonesia is now the center of attention. Airlines are adding routes, hotels are fuller, and tourist cities feel more vibrant than usual.
Traveling Isn't a Trend, It's a Lifestyle
Interestingly, it's not just foreign tourists surging. Domestic tourists also show remarkable growth. In September 2025, domestic tourist movement rose 13.19 percent, from 83 million trips to 94 million trips. Cumulatively from January-September, domestic travel hit 901.9 million trips, up 18.99 percent from the previous year.
The numbers are incredible, and this shows one important thing: Indonesians are traveling more. Whether for short weekend healing, cross-province road trips, staycations, or cultural tourism in trending regions.
Lower travel costs, numerous local events, and increasingly varied destinations are strong drivers. The difference between foreign visits and domestic tourist trips reached 4.61 million—a major contribution to the tourism net foreign exchange which is positive again.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa emphasized that this momentum must be maintained.
"Our efforts are not only focused on increasing foreign tourists, but also strengthening the interest of domestic tourists to keep exploring the beauty of destinations in the Homeland," she said.
For young travelers, this is good news. A growing tourism industry means more new destination choices, more accessible transportation, and more exciting activities you can try.
Tourism Becomes an Economic Engine
Economically speaking, the tourism sector also emerged as a key player this year. In Q3 2025, Indonesia's economy grew 5.04 percent, and the tourism sector contributed 3.96 percent to the national GDP.
This growth is tangible in sectors close to travelers: accommodation, restaurants, cafes, entertainment, tourist transport, to travel agencies. Interestingly, these sectors are now among the highest-growing nationally.
In other words, every trip you take—even just a two-day-one-night getaway—has a significant economic impact. That's why domestic travelers are now considered the main drivers of Indonesia's tourism ecosystem.
Indonesia Prepares to Enter the Busy Phase
Entering Q4, optimism strengthens. The Christmas and New Year holiday tradition always peaks travel movement, and the government is securing this momentum through the "It's Time for Vacation DiIndonesiaAja" campaign.
Additionally, Indonesia is participating in strategic global events, including the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, one of the world's largest tourism exhibitions. This participation helps promote Indonesian destinations directly to global buyers and travel operators.
Domestically, the series of Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) is being held again to boost domestic travel interest. From cultural festivals, local music concerts, sports events, to traditional celebrations in various cities, KEN is a new reason for travelers to explore without having to go abroad.
