The Indonesian U-22 National Team training session was held at Madya Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, November 11, 2025. Two faces long absent from the Garuda squad reappeared: Ivar Jenner and Rafael Struick. Both arrived with one major mission: to defend the 2025 SEA Games gold medal in Thailand.

"Yes, we have one gold, bringing the gold medal back to Indonesia. I think the preparation is good. I've only been here two days, but the team's quality is very good to defend the gold," said Ivar optimistically after the training session under coach Indra Sjafri.

Confidence was also expressed by Rafa, who now plays for Dewa United in Liga 1. For him, there's no room for any outcome other than being champions.

"Yes, last time they won gold, so now our goal must also be the same, champions again. In my opinion, any result other than gold is not enough. So we have to train hard, work hard, and hopefully reach the final and then win it," he stated firmly.

Reunited After a Long Separation

The return of these two diaspora players is hoped to be a breath of fresh air for the Garuda Muda. However, for the two of them, this moment is more than just a call-up to the Garuda Muda; it's also a reunion between two old friends.

"Yes, he (Rafa) is my good friend, even off the field. So I'm very happy to be back in Indonesia again. It's been quite a while for me because I was injured before. And it feels great to meet my friend Rafa again," said Ivar.

Rafa echoed this with the story of their friendship, now stretched across two continents.

"Yes, same for me. Now I've moved to Indonesia (Dewa United), so I don't live in the Netherlands anymore. We used to hang out together often, but now we can only call each other. So I'm really happy he's back and has recovered from his injury," said Rafa.

The two last played together in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against China and Japan last June. After that, Ivar had to step aside due to injury.

Arriving with Confidence

Rafael Struick arrived with positive momentum after scoring his debut goal and providing one assist in the AFC Challenge League, when Dewa United won 4-1 against Shan United.

"As a forward, of course I have to score goals, and that gives me confidence. But I always believe in my own abilities," said the 22-year-old striker.

The 2025 SEA Games in Thailand will be the true test. Playing in a country that has collected 16 SEA Games gold medals presents its own challenge for the Garuda Muda. (Antara)
