Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, has once again proven itself as a pioneer in sports tourism in Indonesia. Not only known for its natural landscapes and cultural richness, Banyuwangi now serves as a tangible example of how sports and tourism can advance in harmony, delivering economic benefits and achievements for the community.

Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir emphasized this while appreciating Banyuwangi's role in developing a sports ecosystem integrated with tourism.

"If all regional heads were like the Regent of Banyuwangi, it would be extraordinary. Banyuwangi can be a model for developing sports and tourism synergistically, creating both economic impact and achievements. The central government will continue to encourage such collaborations," stated Erick Thohir on Thursday, October 30, 2025.

Erick added that synergy between central and regional governments is key to building a strong and sustainable sports ecosystem.

"We have coordinated with the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs to strengthen support for active regional governments like Banyuwangi, because sports aren't just about achievements—they also create jobs, build pride, and strengthen national character," said Erick.

One concrete proof of Banyuwangi's consistency in sports is its successful hosting of world-class international cycling events. These efforts even earned a special award from the Indonesian Cycling Federation (PB ISSI).

The award was presented directly by PB ISSI Chairman and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani during the Indonesia Cycling Federation National Meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.

"Thank you to Banyuwangi for consistently organizing international cycling agendas, like Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (TdBI), which has become an official UCI event. This demonstrates extraordinary commitment from regional governments to support Indonesian cycling," stated Listyo Sigit.

Additionally, Banyuwangi boasts the BMX Supercross Circuit in Muncar, recognized as one of the world's longest BMX tracks and the only international-standard facility in ASEAN.

"With such facilities, PB ISSI is optimistic our athletes can continue achieving world-class accomplishments," stated the National Police Chief.

Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani expressed gratitude for the recognition, calling the award a result of collective efforts by all parties supporting Banyuwangi's sports and tourism spirit.

"This appreciation stems from the hard work of everyone supporting sports tourism development in Banyuwangi. It motivates us to keep advancing sports tourism," said Ipuk.

Through these achievements and consistency, Banyuwangi has transformed from merely an ecotourism destination into Indonesia's premier sports tourism hub.

From cycling races to international events, Banyuwangi's sporting spirit continues to gain momentum, propelling this easternmost regency of Java onto the world map. (Antara)
