Nights at Santiago Bernabéu always have a way of taking the breath away of football lovers. But this El Clasico feels different, not just because of the prestige of Spain's two giants, but because there's a new spirit within Real Madrid.
Xabi Alonso, now standing on the sidelines as head coach, is leading an ambitious project to reassert Los Blancos' dominance after last season became a nightmare.
Madrid arrived at this 10th-week match of the 2025/2026 Spanish League with high confidence. Four consecutive league wins, increasingly solid performances, and a new goal machine named Kylian Mbappé who keeps spreading threats.

"I see them just as good and the people just as motivated. We know the meaning of this match and its passion," said Alonso as quoted from the club's official website.
Under his guidance, Mbappé prepared to write a new chapter in El Clasico history, a fixture that has already given him five goals so far, including a sensational hat-trick last season despite his team losing 3-4 to Barcelona.
Interestingly, Mbappé's record against Barça has become something of its own myth. Since his days wearing the PSG shirt, he has always been on fire against Blaugrana, six goals from four meetings, including a perfect record of scoring past Wojciech Szczesny every time they faced.
Alonso is well aware that this El Clasico is not just about competing strategies, but also a test of character.
"We're working on how we can be more efficient and what needs to be done to perform well, and how that can become the most important factor in the collective mechanism," he said.
However, the shadow of the past hasn't completely disappeared. Last season, Madrid didn't win any of the four El Clasico meetings, including an embarrassing 0-4 defeat at the Bernabéu and two losses in major tournament finals, the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.
Now, Alonso comes with a different approach – more fluid, more adaptive, and more aggressive in transition.
"Last season was different from now. Our project is no longer the same and has just begun," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, on the opposing side, Hansi Flick brings a Barcelona trying to find its rhythm after two defeats in their last four matches.
"We want to bring the winning momentum from the last few matches into the upcoming El Clasico," said Jude Bellingham, Madrid's midfield engine.
With Madrid leading the table with 24 points and Barça two points behind, this match is not just a battle of prestige, but also a duel for early-season supremacy.
In historical context, El Clasico remains the most iconic stage of rivalry in the football world. Out of 206 total meetings, Madrid still leads with 105 wins, while Barcelona follows closely with 103. But last season, it was Blaugrana who recorded four consecutive wins, a signal that Alonso and his team have much to repay.
More than just the final score, El Clasico has always been a barometer for the quality of a new generation. Now, under Alonso and Flick, this fixture is not just nostalgia between two great clubs, but also a laboratory of modern tactics, where the characteristic Spanish attacking philosophy meets modern European football science.
One thing is certain, tonight at the Bernabéu will be a mental test, not only for Mbappé and his teammates, but also for the Real Madrid revival project being built patiently and intelligently.
