Aldila Sutjiadi eliminates the Wimbledon champion, continuing her tournament momentum in Toronto.

Aldila Sutjiadi, alongside her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe, continued their positive momentum on the global tennis stage. This unseeded pair eliminated the fourth seeds and 2026 Wimbledon defending champions Kristina Mladenovic / Hanyu Guo in the first round of the WTA 1000 National Bank Open held in Toronto, Canada.

Aldila/Routliffe secured their place in the Round of 16 after defeating the French-Chinese pairing with a final score of 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-5. The match ran for 2 hours and 3 minutes, concluding on Saturday (8/8/2026) WIB.

This result was a major upset. Mladenovic/Guo entered the Toronto tournament as the fourth seeds and fresh off their 2026 Wimbledon Women's Doubles Grand Slam title. This opening match against Aldila/Routliffe was their first competitive fixture since winning the grass court Grand Slam.

In contrast, Aldila/Routliffe arrived in Toronto having just claimed the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open title in Washington the previous week.

Notably, the pair remained unseeded in Toronto. Tournament seedings were finalised using official rankings before Aldila and Routliffe won the Washington event, which resulted in them drawing this high-calibre opponent immediately in the first round.

Prior to the match, Aldila's coach Christopher Rungkat confirmed that one of the team's core priorities was adapting to the unique court conditions in Toronto.

According to Rungkat, the playing surface in Toronto is noticeably faster than the courts used at the Washington tournament. Aldila and Routliffe required adjustment period after travelling between back-to-back events on short notice.

The pair successfully overcame this challenge.

Aldila/Routliffe played with aggressive intensity from the very first point. They applied consistent pressure on Mladenovic/Guo's service games and closed out the opening set comfortably 6-3.

Mladenovic/Guo raised their game level in the second set. The contest remained tightly balanced as both pairs held all their service games to reach 6-6, forcing the set into a tiebreak.

Mladenovic/Guo gained control of the tiebreak, taking it 7-4 to level the match at one set each, sending the fixture to a deciding championship tiebreak.

In the final deciding phase, Aldila/Routliffe returned to solid, focused play. They maintained composure and held their advantage through to the end, closing out the tiebreak 10-5 to claim the match.

Match statistics confirmed that conversion efficiency was the key winning factor for the Indonesia-New Zealand pairing.

Aldila/Routliffe successfully converted 5 out of their 7 total break point opportunities. By comparison, Mladenovic/Guo only converted 3 out of their 11 break point chances.

This victory extends Aldila and Routliffe's unbeaten run. Only one week after lifting the WTA 500 trophy in Washington, they have now defeated the reigning Wimbledon champions at this elite WTA 1000 level tournament.

For the Round of 16, Aldila/Routliffe will face the pairing of Olivia Nicholls / Tereza Mihalikova.

Nicholls/Mihalikova qualified for this stage after defeating Cristina Bucsa / Eudice Chong 4-6, 7-5, 11-9. Aldila and Routliffe's Round of 16 match is scheduled to be played on Monday (10/8).

With this opening win, Aldila and Routliffe have cleared their first test in Toronto, and proven that their Washington tournament victory was not just a temporary lucky run of form.
