Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Enik Ermawati expressed her deep impression during her first official visit to Wamena. On this trip, she accompanied the Minister of Cooperatives and Jayawijaya Regency government officials to visit Kumukima Tourism Village, and observed the Aikima Mummies first hand—one of Indonesia's most unique cultural heritage sites.

"Earlier today, together with the Minister of Cooperatives, the Regent and Vice Regent of Jayawijaya, we toured the Kumukima tourism village and viewed the mummies at Aikima tourism village. We are absolutely delighted with this first visit to Wamena," she stated.

The Baliem Valley Festival is More Than Just a Cultural Attraction

This year, the 34th Baliem Valley Cultural Festival (FBLB) will be held with an expanded and varied concept. Alongside traditional cultural performances from the indigenous tribes of Highland Papua, the event will also feature the Wamena Coffee Festival and Noken Street Fashion, showcasing how ancient traditions can be merged with modern creativity.

According to Ni Luh, this integrated concept creates new appeal that makes the travel experience in Jayawijaya even more comprehensive.

"We are very pleased to be here, to observe the preparations and implementation plans for the 2026 34th Baliem Valley Cultural Festival, including the cultural performances, Wamena Coffee Festival and 2026 Noken Street Fashion programme," she remarked.

The Baliem Valley Cultural Festival has long been established as one of Indonesia's most prestigious tourism events. Every year, it draws domestic and international travellers who come to witness the traditional inter-tribal mock war ceremonies, indigenous dances, traditional music, and the daily life of native communities in the Baliem Valley.

Tourism Villages, Aikima Mummies and Wamena Coffee as Key Attractions

We have also identified the huge potential of the local coffee sector. This is homework that we must work on collectively, to increase both visitor numbers and the length of time tourists stay in Jayawijaya," she added.

Apart from coffee, Jayawijaya also produces other premium agricultural commodities including pineapples, which have strong potential to be integrated into agritourism travel packages.

Collaboration to Advance Highland Papua Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism hopes that synergy between central and regional governments will strengthen Jayawijaya's position as a premier tourist destination in eastern Indonesia. Increased visitor arrivals are expected to deliver greater economic impact for local communities.

"Through joint collaboration we can grow tourist arrivals, and improve the welfare of the indigenous people of Jayawijaya and wider Highland Papua, through both the tourism and agritourism sectors," she stated.

Ni Luh also emphasised that Jayawijaya's greatest strength lies in its well-preserved living cultural roots. For this reason, all tourism development must prioritise the preservation of local traditions and values.

"We hope that going forward, the tourism sector here will continue to grow, while the cultural roots that form its foundation are always protected and nurtured properly," she said.

She noted that the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival is an iconic Papua tourism landmark that holds strong appeal for both domestic and international visitors. As such, the standard of its organisation must be continuously improved, to maintain its status as part of Indonesia's Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) flagship event programme.

"We invite all travellers to come here and experience the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival first hand. Your presence will encourage local communities to continue preserving their precious indigenous heritage. It is our hope that this festival will remain in the top 10 Karisma Event Nusantara listings, and continue raising its standard to attract more visitors to this region," she concluded.
