James Trafford Officially Joins Leeds United, Becomes the Most Expensive English Goalkeeper in All History

Leeds United have officially announced the signing of England international goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City on Thursday (6/8/2026) local time.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper has signed a five-year contract running until June 2031 in a transfer valued at approximately 40 million pounds sterling (around IDR 860 billion). This fee breaks the club's all-time incoming transfer record and also makes Trafford the most expensive British goalkeeper in history.

While neither Leeds United nor Manchester City have disclosed the official exact figure, multiple UK media outlets have reported the base transfer value sits at around 40 million pounds before additional performance bonuses.

As part of the agreement, Manchester City have also retained a 20% sell-on clause for any profit from a future sale of the player, alongside matching rights that allow the club to equalise any third party offer received for Trafford down the line.

Leeds Seeking First Choice Keeper, Trafford Targets Regular Game Time

This transfer delivers a beneficial outcome for both parties.

Leeds required an established starting goalkeeper to reinforce their defensive line ahead of the 2026/2027 Premier League campaign, while Trafford was chasing consistent first team minutes after failing to lock down a regular starting spot at Manchester City.

After returning to the Etihad Stadium in summer 2025 when City activated a buy-back clause from Burnley, Trafford did hold the starting position during the opening weeks of the season.

However, the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma saw him relegated to the bench, only featuring regularly in domestic cup competitions. He finished the most recent season with 17 total appearances across all competitions for Manchester City.

Despite his limited first team opportunities, Trafford was still selected in Thomas Tuchel's England national squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Trafford: Now Is The Time To Focus Fully On Leeds

Following his official unveiling as a Leeds United player, Trafford stated he was relieved the extended transfer process had finally concluded.

James Trafford becomes Leeds United's third permanent arrival of the 2026 summer transfer window, following the earlier signings of Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic.

Leeds finished the previous Premier League season in 14th position, and will kick off their 2026/2027 campaign against Nottingham Forest on 22 August.
