Jannik Sinner Enters the List of Tennis Players with the Most Weeks Ranked as World Number One

Jannik Sinner has cemented his name in global tennis history. The Italian athlete now joins the top 10 players with the most cumulative weeks ranked men's world number one, after commencing his 81st week at the peak of the ATP Rankings.

Sinner holds 10th position on the all-time ATP list for longest total tenure as world number one.

This achievement stands as a critical career milestone for Sinner. Per official ATP records, the 24-year-old has surpassed Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, who accumulated 80 total weeks at the top of the world rankings.

Sinner's path to ATP dominance was not without setbacks. He temporarily lost the world number one crown after being defeated by his primary rival Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 US Open final.

However he bounced back at the start of the 2026 season, reclaiming the top ranking after defeating Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. This result kicked off Sinner's current unbroken run at number one, which has now reached 15 consecutive weeks.

Prior to overtaking Hewitt, Sinner had already surpassed Alcaraz's career total of 66 weeks at number one, before also moving past fellow tennis greats Stefan Edberg (72 weeks) and then Hewitt's 80 week mark.

To climb higher on the all-time rankings list, Sinner will next need to exceed Andre Agassi's 101 career weeks at world number one, followed by Bjorn Borg's 109 week record.

Novak Djokovic still occupies the very top of this all-time list, holding the extraordinary record of 428 total weeks as men's world number one.

Trailing the Serbian star in order are Roger Federer (310 weeks), Pete Sampras (286), Ivan Lendl (270), Jimmy Connors (268), Rafael Nadal (209) and John McEnroe (170).

Sinner has clear opportunities to extend his personal record. He currently holds a 4,970 point lead over his closest challenger Alexander Zverev, meaning his position at the top of the ATP standings remains relatively secure in the near term.

Sinner's confidence has risen further after successfully defending his 2026 Wimbledon title. This Grand Slam victory has reinforced his dominance and widened the points gap with his competitors.

The upcoming North American hard court swing presents Sinner with major opportunities to add ranking points. Last season he did not compete at the Canada Masters 1000, and only finished runner-up at both the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and US Open.

Sinner first reached the world number one position on 10 June 2024, when he claimed the top ranking after winning the Australian Open - the first Grand Slam title of his professional career.

During his first spell at the summit of the ATP Rankings, Sinner held the number one spot for 65 consecutive weeks, the 7th longest unbroken reign in men's tennis history.

Still at a relatively young age and delivering consistent elite form, Sinner is on track to continue rising through the ranks of ATP all-time legends.
