Travel trends are no longer limited solely to enjoying natural landscapes or seeking out regional specialty cuisine. Sports activities have increasingly become a primary reason for people to travel. This growing phenomenon is being further amplified through the sport tourism concept, including via the Senior Happy Run 5K 2026, an event designed to encourage people aged 50 and over to stay active while also helping promote Indonesia's tourist destinations.
The Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia has expressed appreciation for the Senior Happy Run 5K 2026, which was initiated by the Tourism Retirees Association (Paguyuban Pensiunan Pariwisata / Parapenspar). This initiative is regarded as a positive step toward expanding the national sport tourism ecosystem, while also demonstrating that healthy lifestyles are accessible and enjoyable for all demographics, including senior citizens.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, retirees who dedicated decades of their careers to the tourism sector still hold a vital role as ambassadors that can introduce the beauty of Indonesia's destinations to the wider public.

Sport Tourism as the New Engine for Regional Economic Growth
“For these seniors, their esprit de corps, professional pride and sense of duty carries on as they continue serving as tourism ambassadors. This is exactly what makes the Ministry of Tourism deeply value this initiative. We hope that with the growth of sport tourism, our national tourism sector will continue to thrive,” stated Vinsensius Jemandu, Lead Expert for Tourism and Creative Economy Affairs at the Ministry of Tourism, following an interview in Jakarta on Sunday, 12 July 2026.
Beyond the Jakarta event, the Ministry of Tourism also hopes that the Senior Happy Run model can be rolled out across other regions, particularly at Indonesia's five Super Priority Tourism Destinations. It is believed that hosting running events for senior demographics will create more varied travel experiences while also driving visitor numbers.
“Looking ahead, we hope to see a Senior Run hosted at each of these five Super Priority Destinations. This way we can properly grow sport tourism across all our tourist locations,” Vinsensius added.
The five Super Priority Tourism Destinations referenced are Lake Toba, Borobudur, Mandalika, Likupang, and Labuan Bajo. All of these areas possess strong potential as venues for sports events that are integrated with full tourism experiences.
Carrying the theme Healthy & Happiness, the 2026 Senior Happy Run 5K was held on the grounds of the Ministry of Tourism Office in Jakarta on Sunday 12 July 2026. Organised by Parapenspar in partnership with Beyond Run and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, the event successfully attracted approximately 1,000 participants aged over 50, drawn from various senior communities across Indonesia.
Participant enthusiasm exceeded the organising committee's initial projections. Parapenspar Advisory Board member Sapta Nirwandar noted that activities like this provide seniors with a space to remain active, maintain their health, and expand their social networks after entering retirement.
“This is the first time we have had 1,000 attendees. That number really surprised us, usually we only get a few hundred people. It was wonderful, many of the participants were even 60 to 70 years old. This is exactly what we should be cultivating: health and happiness are also core life goals for our senior community,” Sapta stated.
Notably, the Senior Happy Run was not designed purely around running speed. The committee created two separate event categories to ensure every participant could take part comfortably according to their own preferences.
Senior Happy Run Event Director Oni Yulfian explained that the first category was intended for participants who wished to compete for the fastest finish times and podium placements.
The second category instead focused on participant creativity, themed around the five Super Priority Tourism Destinations. Runners were encouraged to wear costumes inspired by Indonesian cultural traditions, creating a festive atmosphere while also showcasing the country's rich cultural and tourism heritage.
“We asked the runners to be as creative as possible, especially with traditional regional attire. We split all participants into five groups representing each of the super priority destinations: Toba, Borobudur, Mandalika, Likupang and Labuan Bajo. Each group had distinct colour schemes and race bibs, and we judged entries on their creativity,” he explained further.
This concept illustrates that sport tourism is not only about athletic competition. It also serves as a medium for cultural promotion, destination marketing, and creating memorable travel experiences that resonate with the public. If similar initiatives are held regularly across different regions, Indonesia will be well positioned to build a diverse national sport tourism event calendar that can attract both domestic and international visitors.
