Jakarta is no longer just a center for business and entertainment. The capital city is starting to position itself as a new magnet for sports-loving travelers, particularly Indonesia's rapidly growing running community. This vision was directly emphasized by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung during the launch of the Jekate Running Series in Jakarta.
“We will transform Jakarta into a ‘sport tourism’ destination,” stated Pramono Anung during the launch event of the Jekate Running Series in Jakarta on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
This commitment goes beyond mere slogans. For young travel enthusiasts, sport tourism represents a fresh experience—visiting cities not only for staycations or culinary adventures but also joining running events while exploring surrounding areas. Jakarta is taking this opportunity extremely seriously.

Jakarta and the Explosive Running Trend
Over the past three years, running has surged in popularity. In major cities, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon races sell out within minutes of registration opening.
Jakarta itself hosts running events almost weekly, ranging from community races and fun runs to international competitions like the Jakarta Marathon, which draws thousands of sports tourists to the capital.
Pramono recognizes this as new tourism potential. He stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government will serve as a strategic partner for all organizers.
“I’ve instructed my team: Anyone wanting to hold a running event in Jakarta will receive our full facilitation,” he affirmed.
Support includes streamlined permits, route security, and strategic deployment of personnel during events. For out-of-town runners or travelers attending races, well-managed facilities are a major added value.
Running as a Gateway to Urban Exploration
Jakarta actually boasts numerous scenic running routes—the iconic Sudirman-Thamrin corridor, green tracks in GBK, historic Kota Tua, Lake Sunter’s shores, or urban forests in GBK. Packaging these through running events creates deeply personal and memorable traveler experiences.
The provincial government’s support also aims to generate direct economic benefits for locals. Races attract thousands, boosting opportunities for local SMEs, hotel occupancy, transport rentals, and post-race coffee spots popular among runners.
“Additionally, Pramono wants regularly held events in Jakarta to become a special boon for merchants, SMEs, hotels, and other business sectors,” he noted.
Ambitious Target: 40–50 Thousand Runners
Jakarta is fully committed to building this ecosystem. The government targets massive participation within two years.
“By 2026, we aim for a running event with 40,000 participants, growing to 50,000 by 2027,” he added.
This goal rivals major races in Tokyo, Chicago, or Singapore. Achieving it could place Jakarta among Asia’s most sought-after running destinations.
To truly become a sport tourism city, supportive policies must become tangible—expanding comfortable public spaces, safe pedestrian zones, interactive fountains, and green routes.
Some areas already show upgrades, including new sidewalks, bike lanes, and activity-friendly open spaces.
For young travelers, this is welcome news. Visiting Jakarta now means new experiences: joining morning races, urban exploration, culinary hunts, or sunset views at Ancol—an active vacation style increasingly favored by today’s generation.
With government backing, thriving communities, and hundreds of annual running events, Jakarta holds strong potential to become Southeast Asia’s premier sport tourism hub.
