Jurgen Klopp is reportedly one step away from being officially appointed as the new head coach of the German national football team. The former Liverpool manager is said to have reached an agreement with the German Football Association (DFB) to take charge of Der Panzer until 2030.

According to a report from The Athletic on Saturday, 11 July 2026, Klopp has agreed to a five-year contract. Provided all proceedings go smoothly, he will lead Germany at Euro 2028 and the subsequent international tournament cycle with the national team.

The DFB has also confirmed that an initial meeting was held with Klopp in New York to discuss the potential cooperation. The federation is optimistic that these discussions will result in a final agreement, making Klopp the leading candidate to replace Julian Nagelsmann as head coach.

"DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held in-depth talks with Klopp on Friday, 10 July 2026 local time. During this meeting, both parties are reported to have reached common ground on all key contract terms," stated an official DFB release quoted by The Athletic.

Nevertheless, the DFB clarified that negotiation processes will continue next week. While both sides are confident a deal can be finalised shortly, approval is still required from Red Bull, Klopp's current employer.

Alongside Red Bull's consent, the contract must also receive final approval through a meeting of the Supervisory Board and the General Meeting of Shareholders of DFB GmbH & Co. KG before any official announcement can be made.

Senior DFB officials are currently in New York for face-to-face discussions with Klopp. Alongside his role as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, the 59-year-old coach is also working as a commentator throughout the 2026 World Cup tournament.

Klopp Named Top Candidate To Replace Nagelsmann

Klopp has long been linked with the Germany national team head coach position. Earlier in July, the DFB confirmed that the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager was the leading candidate to take over from Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann's tenure came to an end following Germany's shock exit in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. Die Mannschaft were eliminated by Paraguay after a dramatic penalty shootout.

This result extended Germany's poor run of form at the World Cup. After crashing out in the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 editions, the four-time world champions once again failed to progress deep into the 2026 tournament. Germany's last World Cup title still remains the 2014 triumph in Brazil.

Prior to this, Nagelsmann had publicly stated his desire to remain as Germany head coach until his existing contract expired in 2028. However, just days after the squad returned home from the 2026 World Cup, both parties agreed to terminate the working relationship early.

Jurgen Klopp's Impressive Career Track Record

Klopp is widely regarded as one of the most successful German coaches of the last two decades. During his time at Borussia Dortmund, he delivered Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles before accepting the Liverpool managerial role in 2015.

Over nine seasons in charge of The Reds, Klopp transformed Liverpool into one of the dominant forces in European football. He secured every major honour available including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Now, the German football public awaits official confirmation on whether Klopp will begin the next chapter of his career by leading Der Panzer on the international stage.
