Portugal national team's run at the 2026 World Cup came to an early end after suffering a 0-1 defeat against Spain in the Round of 16. This marks the third time the Selecao das Quinas have been eliminated at the Round of 16 stage in the last five editions, following exits in 2010 and 2018. All eyes have now turned to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal captain started all five matches for his side and contributed three goals. Nevertheless, his performances have sparked widespread debate.
Some argue that Ronaldo no longer provides significant impact for the team, while others contend that the superstar has not received the proper support around him on the pitch.

French football legend Youri Djorkaeff has stated that the core issue for Portugal does not lie with Ronaldo, but rather with how the team structured their game plan around him.
"If you make the decision to field Cristiano Ronaldo, the entire team should adjust their play to maximise his abilities. Yet that was not evident at all out on the pitch," stated the 1998 World Cup winning former player in an interview with Radio RMC Sport.
According to Djorkaeff, Ronaldo did not receive adequate support from his teammates throughout the tournament. He believes they failed to create situations that would allow Ronaldo to perform at his best level.
The former Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan midfielder also noted that it is unfair for the public to expect Ronaldo to alter his playing style at his advanced age.
"If you do not want to use him, do not call him up or do not put him on the pitch. But if he is selected to play, the team must be built to leverage his strengths," Djorkaeff asserted.
Djorkaeff also highlighted the tendency of Portugal's players to over-rely on Ronaldo during difficult moments. While Portugal have a squad full of talented players, he observed that almost all of the team's pressure and responsibility was placed on Ronaldo's shoulders.
He stated that it is time for Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and the rest of Portugal's new generation of players to step up and take on greater responsibility for the team.
"You cannot keep expecting Cristiano to be the one that fixes every single problem. He is not the only player on this team that should be the difference maker," he concluded.
The 2026 World Cup was Ronaldo's final appearance at the tournament. Following Portugal's elimination, the 41-year-old striker confirmed that he will never feature at a World Cup finals again.
Over his international career with Portugal, Ronaldo's best World Cup finish was guiding his nation to fourth place at the 2006 edition held in Germany. The journey on football's biggest global stage has now officially come to an end for one of the greatest players of all time.
