Santolo Beach in Garut Regency was filled with a spirit of togetherness as thousands of local residents and fishermen gathered for the 2026 Santolo Fishermen's Thanksgiving. This annual tradition held on 5 July 2026 is not merely a celebration of gratitude for ocean harvests, but also an initiative to preserve coastal cultural heritage while boosting the regional tourism appeal.
Carrying the theme "Caring for the Seas, Nurturing Santolo Coastal Culture", the event received full support from the Garut Regency Government. Beyond an expression of the fishermen's gratitude, this program is also designed to drive economic growth for coastal communities through the tourism sector.
Thousands of residents packed the Santolo Beach area to take part in the series of events, which was officially opened by Aris Munandar, Chairman of the Garut Regency Regional House of Representatives. A warm atmosphere of solidarity was palpable from the very start of the ceremony, demonstrating how local traditions remain a central part of coastal community life.

Aris emphasized that the Fishermen's Thanksgiving serves as a symbol of public gratitude for the abundant ocean yields, as well as a reminder of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystem sustainability.
"This is a special moment for fishermen to give thanks for all blessings, and to express gratitude to Allah SWT for the enormous gifts bestowed upon Santolo Beach," he stated, as quoted by the Garut Regency Communications and Informatics Office.
Beyond being a cultural celebration, the Garut Regency Government also recognises the massive potential of Santolo Beach as a flagship tourism destination. For this reason, improving access routes to the beach area is one of the government's key priorities, in order to continuously increase visitor numbers and deliver wider economic benefits for local residents.
Beni Yoga Gunasantika, Head of the Garut Regency Tourism and Culture Office, stated that the local government will continue holding discussions to upgrade infrastructure leading to Santolo Beach. However, he stressed that tourism development must always proceed hand in hand with marine ecosystem conservation efforts.
"We have been granted blessings and livelihoods that allow fishermen here in Santolo to benefit from the ocean's produce. Going forward, we will discuss within the regional government how we can continue improving access infrastructure to Santolo. At the same time, we also remind all fishermen to always protect the marine ecosystem. If not us, then who will?" he remarked.
The Garut Regency Government is targeting the Santolo Fishermen's Thanksgiving to become an established annual tourism event that can attract greater numbers of visitors, both from within and outside the region. This way, cultural traditions will not only be preserved, but also act as an economic driver for coastal communities.
The 2026 Santolo Fishermen's Thanksgiving featured a wide variety of activities with direct public participation. These included free health check-ups, civil administration services, BPJS Employment social security assistance, orphaned children donations, as well as diverse cultural performances that enriched the visitor experience.
The festive atmosphere was further heightened by a decorated boat competition showcasing the fishermen's creativity, alongside Sundanese traditional wayang golek puppet performances.
This blend of tradition, public services and cultural attractions has positioned the Santolo Fishermen's Thanksgiving as more than just a thanksgiving ritual: it has grown into a coastal cultural festival that reinforces Garut's identity as one of the leading cultural tourism destinations in West Java.
