Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that the United States must use their crushing 1-4 defeat against Belgium as material for full evaluation, after their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign was eliminated at the Round of 16 stage. The Argentine head coach acknowledged his side failed to replicate the impressive form shown in their prior matches.

Playing in front of their home supporters in Seattle on Tuesday WIB, the host nation was unable to deliver their peak performance.

Belgium operated far more effectively, converting attacking opportunities while retaining full control of the match tempo.

"This match proved incredibly difficult right from the start. We extend our congratulations to Belgium, they were the better side today. This simply was not our day," Pochettino stated on FIFA's official platform Tuesday.

Despite his disappointment with the result, Pochettino assessed this defeat must act as a valuable lesson for the United States squad to build improvement moving forward.

"We need to learn, review this match properly, and understand why we could not perform with the same approach we showed in our earlier World Cup fixtures," he added.

Pochettino also did not deny that Belgium fully earned their quarter-final ticket, having delivered far more consistent performances across the full duration of the match.

Belgium displayed immediate aggression from kickoff. The Red Devils' high pressing system paid off in the 9th minute, when Charles De Ketelaere capitalised on disarray inside the United States penalty area to open the scoring.

The hosts briefly raised hope for the Seattle crowd when Malik Tillman scored an equaliser in the 31st minute. His free kick deflected off Hans Vanaken to wrong-foot goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, levelling the score at 1-1.

Any celebration for the United States was extremely short-lived. Just two minutes later, Belgium retook the lead as De Ketelaere headed home Leandro Trossard's cross, closing the first half with Belgium holding a 2-1 advantage.

After the half time break, disaster struck the hosts once more. A critical error from goalkeeper Matt Freese, who lost possession outside his own penalty box, was punished by Hans Vanaken who netted Belgium's third goal in the 57th minute.

The United States' situation worsened further when captain Christian Pulisic sustained an injury and was forced off the pitch just two minutes after that goal. Losing their primary attacking outlet made any attempted comeback almost impossible.

Belgium finally confirmed their 4-1 victory during stoppage time. Romelu Lukaku added his name to the scoresheet, finishing a pass from Vanaken to cap off a dominant display from the Belgian side.

This victory advances Belgium to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They will face Spain at Los Angeles Stadium on Saturday WIB, while the United States end their World Cup campaign on home soil in front of their own supporters.
