If Turkey has Cappadocia as one of its tourist attractions, in Garut there's the Ngapungkeun Balon tradition which is more locally rooted yet equally captivating.
In Panawuan Village, Tarogong Kidul, the community has a unique way of celebrating Eid al-Fitr: flying giant balloons into the sky. This tradition isn't merely entertainment—it has been part of the local cultural identity since the 1960s.
The Head of Garut's Tourism and Culture Office (Disparbud), Beni Yoga Gunasantika, views this tradition as having significant potential for regional Tourism.

"We see this activity as a potential tourism attraction based on compelling local wisdom with strong appeal," he stated.
Every Eid, Panawuan's open field transforms into an exciting venue to watch colossal balloons gradually ascend and adorn the sky. Their scale is impressive—some reach diameters of 20 meters with heights around 10 meters.
What makes it extraordinary is that multiple balloons can be launched simultaneously from one location. Imagine the sky filled with vibrant balloons—the atmosphere resembles an international festival yet carries a distinct local flavor.
This tradition emerged from the community's post-Eid spirit of togetherness. Beyond locals, many returning migrants or out-of-town tourists purposely visit to witness this spectacle.
"This genuinely embodies the residents' joy and unity after Eid. We see extraordinary enthusiasm—it's a cultural expression organically nurtured by the community itself," he continued.
Notably, the tradition maintains order and safety during execution, making it highly suitable for development into a structured annual Tourism Event.
"Moving forward, we'll continue mentoring efforts to refine this activity—making it safer and transforming it into a prestigious Tourism Agenda for Garut Regency," he affirmed.
For cultural explorers, Ngapungkeun Balon offers more than airborne balloons—it immerses you in the village's warm Eid atmosphere, a rare experience in metropolitan cities.
