The FIFA Disciplinary Committee's decision to suspend the one-match ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun has sparked controversy. FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed he holds no authority to influence rulings issued by FIFA's judicial body.
Despite this, Infantino stated the entire process was conducted in full compliance with FIFA's official operating mechanisms.
Prior to the ruling, Balogun received a red card during the United States' Round of 32 fixture against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Defeating Bosnia, the United States follows Canada and Mexico into the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
This suspended ban allows Balogun to be selected for the United States' Round of 16 match against Belgium. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) formally protested this decision and filed an official appeal with FIFA.
"FIFA's judicial bodies operate fully independently without interference from any party. Their independence is critical to the credibility and integrity of football, and this principle must always be respected," Infantino stated, as quoted by FIFA Media.
Per Infantino, every disciplinary case is adjudicated based on applicable rules, official regulations, and all factual evidence uncovered during the investigation process.
Allegations of external interference intensified after reports emerged claiming the ruling was influenced by interventions from United States President Donald Trump, senior government officials, the United States Soccer Federation, and Balogun's legal representation.
Infantino did not deny holding a conversation with Donald Trump, however he rejected any claim that this discussion impacted FIFA's legal proceedings.
"I did receive a telephone call from President Donald Trump, just as I regularly receive calls from heads of state, government officials, and football stakeholders across the entire world," Infantino revealed.
He confirmed he only provided Trump with general updates on the public status of the case being reviewed by FIFA's judicial body during the call.
"This is how the FIFA system functions, and this is a principle I will always uphold unwaveringly," he emphasised.
Meanwhile, FIFA officially rejected the RBFA appeal. The governing body ruled that the Belgian federation does not hold legal standing to challenge a disciplinary case concerning a player representing another national association.
Despite the rejection, the RBFA has confirmed it is still considering further legal action regarding the ruling.
Infantino acknowledged that as FIFA President, he does not always agree with every decision issued by the Disciplinary Committee. However he stressed that respecting the body's independence is non-negotiable to protect the integrity of global football.
"Sometimes I agree with the rulings, sometimes I do not. But I will always respect those decisions, and the full autonomy of the body that issues them," Infantino stated.
According to Infantino, respect for judicial body independence and the rule of law are the core foundations required to maintain fair and credible competition.
The Balogun case controversy has become one of the most widely discussed issues during the 2026 World Cup knockout phase. Amid intense public scrutiny, FIFA maintains that all rulings were reached exclusively through internal legal procedures with no external interference whatsoever.
