One of the most iconic stadiums in the United States has become the subject of widespread discussion. The pitch quality at New York New Jersey Stadium, which is set to host the final of the 2026 World Cup, has received criticism from multiple star players.
This scrutiny emerged after the France National Team opened their tournament campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal. While Les Bleus successfully secured three points, the condition of the pitch became the main talking point immediately after the match.
New York New Jersey Stadium was previously known as MetLife Stadium. This venue serves as the home ground for two NFL teams, the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, this stadium is scheduled to host eight matches, including the showpiece final match at the climax of the tournament.
However, its status as the final venue has raised serious questions after France midfielder Adrien Rabiot and several other players publicly complained about the stadium's pitch quality.
"Regarding the playing surface, I can barely even call this an acceptable pitch. It feels much more like artificial turf, it is far too hard and rigid," Rabiot stated, as quoted by BBC.
Rabiot's comments add to the list of grievances previously raised by Brazil forward Vinicius Junior. The Selecao star admitted he struggled to find his playing rhythm during Brazil's 1-1 draw against Morocco.
"Once we entered the second half with the Hot Weather, the pitch dried out extremely quickly. This slowed the pace of the game right down and made it very difficult for us to settle into the rhythm we wanted," Vinicius explained.
These player complaints are not without basis. For regular NFL fixtures, this stadium uses permanent artificial turf. Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, event organizers installed a temporary natural grass overlay in an attempt to meet FIFA standards.
Nevertheless, the end result has been judged unsatisfactory. The playing surface is considered overly hard and fails to support the fast, dynamic style of play characteristic of modern Football.
This issue has attracted extra public attention as New York New Jersey Stadium already held a poor reputation for the quality of its playing surface.
Within the NFL community, the venue is even infamously associated with the so-called "MetLife Curse", after numerous players suffered serious injuries that were linked to the bad pitch conditions.
For casual spectators, pitch quality may appear to be a minor detail. But for professional players, ground conditions directly affect match pace, passing accuracy, and most critically, the risk of injury.
