Raising the Red and White Flag to Promote Coral Reef Tourism on Sahi Island

The Red and White flag flutters amidst the blue coastal landscape of Sahi Island, Natuna, Riau Islands. Beyond the celebrations marking the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, this flag raising serves as a way to introduce the marine tourism potential of one of Indonesia's border territories.

Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) Base Raden Sadjad (RSA) Natuna held the Red and White flag raising ceremony on Sahi Island on Sunday, 9 August.

This activity is part of a series of tourism destination promotions, as well as an effort to foster nationalistic spirit during the independence month.

"This event is a momentum to strengthen the spirit of nationalism while also showcasing the tourism potential that Natuna holds," stated First Marshal Onesimus Gede Rai Aryadi, Commander of Natuna RSA Air Force Base.

Exploring the Marine Allure of Sahi Island

Sahi Island was selected for this event due to its marine tourism appeal: crystal clear waters, coral reef systems, and diverse marine life surrounding its shores.

Visitors can experience breathtaking underwater panoramas here. Meanwhile, from the island itself, tourists can view the landscape of Ranai Mountain Geosite, one of the flagship natural attractions in Natuna Regency.

Access to Sahi Island is another unique characteristic. At high tide, the island is fully separated from the surrounding mainland. When the tide recedes however, visitors can reach the island entirely on foot.

The Red and White Flag Across Multiple Destinations

The raising and unfurling of the Red and White flag was not only conducted on Sahi Island, but also at a number of other tourist sites across the region.

Alongside being a symbol of independence celebrations, this initiative acts as a method to position Natuna as a recognised travel destination.

The marine tourism potential of Sahi Island and other local sites does not only need public introduction, but also active protection.

Natuna's natural wealth forms a core part of this border region's identity. Coral reefs, marine biodiversity, coastal areas, and the landscape of Ranai Mountain are all valuable assets that can be developed as sustainable tourist attractions.

"We want the spirit of independence to be expressed not only through raising the flag, but also by introducing and safeguarding the potential our region holds," he concluded.
