The Indonesia national football team will have the opportunity to field their full best squad for the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup in Jakarta, as this tournament is listed as an official FIFA calendar event. This situation allows head coach John Herdman to assemble the strongest possible line-up for Indonesia.
With official FIFA event status, all domestic and foreign clubs are legally required to release any player that receives a national team call-up in accordance with official FIFA regulations.
"Looking at the structure of this FIFA ASEAN tournament, all of our top players will definitely be eligible to play. Of course we hope that this will let the team achieve their maximum possible performance," stated PSSI General Chairman Erick Thohir after a cross-agency coordination meeting for the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Jakarta, Monday.

Final Squad Remains Subject To Player Condition
Even with the opportunity to call a full strength squad open, Erick noted that the final team roster will still be adjusted based on circumstances in the lead-up to the tournament. Player physical fitness remains one of the main deciding factors.
Erick stated his hope that every player required by Herdman will be in peak healthy condition when the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup commences.
"But as the host country, naturally we all hope that the national team can put in a strong, successful performance. That is what we are all working towards," he added.
Indonesia Drawn In The Same Group As Malaysia
The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to run from 23 September until 3 October. This tournament will be split into two separate divisions: the Premier Division will be hosted in Indonesia, while the Challenge Division will be held in Hong Kong.
Indonesia is placed in Premier Division Group A alongside Malaysia, India and Singapore. Meanwhile Premier Division Group B is made up of Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the Philippines.
Group A is guaranteed to deliver intense competition. Indonesia will face Malaysia and Singapore, two very familiar long-time rivals within Southeast Asian football.
Challenge Division Group A consists of Hong Kong, Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam, while Cambodia, Laos and Timor Leste are placed in Challenge Division Group B.
No Semi-Final Stage: Group Winners Advance Directly To The Final
The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup uses a different format than standard regional tournaments. Group winners will secure direct qualification to the final match, with no semi-final round being played.
This format means every single group stage match carries very high stakes. Teams will have almost no margin for error, as even one poor result can drastically eliminate their chance to finish top of their group.
