Deniz Undav Emerges as Hero, Germany Secures Their Spot in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.

Germany secured their spot in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in their Group E fixture held at BMO Field, Toronto, Sunday 21 June 2026 WIB.

This success marks a major milestone for Die Mannschaft after disappointing exits in the previous two World Cup editions. At the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, Germany failed to progress past the group stage. They have now ended this negative run, sealing their place in the next round earlier than expected.

Ivory Coast had held the upper hand for much of the match after Franck Kessie scored in the first half. However, the introduction of substitute Deniz Undav completely turned the tide of the game, as the striker netted a brace to complete Germany's comeback.

The three points collected strengthen Julian Nagelsmann's side at the top of Group E, with the team now holding six points from two matches played.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast sit in second place on three points. They will be required to pick up a win in their final group stage match in order to retain their qualification chances for the knockout round.

From the opening whistle, Germany started aggressively and created the first chance of the game through Kai Havertz's strike, which was successfully kept out by Ivory Coast Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Germany did manage to put the ball in the back of the net through Aleksandar Pavlovic shortly after, but the referee disallowed the goal after ruling a foul had been committed in the build up.

Instead, it was Ivory Coast who opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Amad Diallo fired an initial shot that was only parried away, allowing Franck Kessie to pounce quickly on the loose ball and fire home to make it 1-0.

Germany found the net once again shortly after through Kai Havertz, but this was also ruled out for another foul in the lead up to the attempt, marking their second disallowed goal of the match.

As the second half got underway, Germany continued to push forward on the attack in search of an equaliser. Despite controlling possession and creating multiple openings, they were unable to convert any of their chances.

At the other end, Ivory Coast threatened on several dangerous counter attacks, though poor finishing prevented Les Elephants from extending their lead.

Germany's pressure finally paid off in the 68th minute. Nadiem Amiri delivered a cross which was met perfectly by Deniz Undav, who guided a neat finish past the keeper to level the score at 1-1.

Following the equaliser, Germany increased their attacking intensity even further. Nathaniel Brown and Nadiem Amiri both had golden opportunities to take the lead, only to be denied by another outstanding display from Yahia Fofana.

Just as the match looked set to end in a draw, Germany found the winning goal deep in stoppage time. In the 94th minute, Felix Nmecha played a perfectly weighted through ball that was dispatched clinically by Deniz Undav, making the final score 2-1.

This goal sealed Germany's victory and confirmed their qualification to the 2026 World Cup Round of 32, while also keeping them temporarily at the top of the Group E Standings.
