The chilly mountain air, the scent of damp earth, and the challenging trails witnessed the spirit of 1,000 runners from across Indonesia and abroad at the Slamet Trail Run 2025. Held on Sunday morning, October 19, 2025, in the D’Las tourist area, Serang Village, Purbalingga Regency, this event was more than just a race; it was a celebration of a healthy lifestyle, love for nature, and the increasingly popular sport tourism in the country.
Mount Slamet, with its peak soaring 3,432 meters above sea level (masl), served as the main arena for the runners. They challenged themselves in three categories: 5K, 14K, and 25K, traversing the legendary rocky and sandy trails on the slopes of Central Java's highest mountain.
"Five other participants are from abroad. Among them are from Zimbabwe," revealed the Head of the Central Java Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office, Muhamad Masrofi, during a press conference at Hotel Owabong last Saturday.

According to him, 56 percent of participants came from around Central Java, while 32 percent came from outside the province — proof that this event successfully attracted runners from across regions and countries.
Sport Tourism that Moves the Economy
This event followed up on the directive of Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi, who wants to strengthen the sport tourism ecosystem in his region.
"The hope is that this can become a premier trail run event in Indonesia and internationally. If successful, it can be developed further with Lawu Trail Run, Sumbing Sindoro Trail Run, and others," said Masrofi.
A similar sentiment was expressed by the Central Java Regional Secretary, Sumarno, who views sport tourism as a quick way to boost the regional economy.
"One of the things that accelerates bringing in tourists is sport tourism," he stated.
According to him, Slamet Trail Run is not just a sporting event, but also a new economic magnet.
"Those who come will eat, stay overnight, shop. That will certainly support the economy in Central Java," he added.
This was no exaggeration, as hotels and lodgings throughout Purbalingga were reported full over the weekend. Local restaurants were also bustling with participants and event supporters.
Mount Slamet, the Hard Terrain Loved by Runners
One of the main attractions of this event is the extreme character of Mount Slamet's terrain.
"The characteristic of Mount Slamet is that it's famous for having a lot of sand and rocks on top. This is the part being promoted because trail runners like a challenge," said Sumarno.
The Slamet Trail Run route offers varied trails from pine forests, rocky areas, to steep climbs in the highlands. Unsurprisingly, many runners call this course "brutal but beautiful."
For trail running enthusiasts, terrain like this is not just a physical challenge, but also a spiritual experience testing stamina while providing inner peace while racing amidst the open nature.
Premiere Event that Immediately Earned Appreciation
Slamet Trail Run 2025 is the premiere event in Purbalingga Regency, yet it was a huge success. The enthusiasm of the community and local government was high.
"This is a source of pride for us, the Purbalingga Regency Government and its people. This is a prestigious event because the participants number one thousand people from across islands and even abroad," said Mukodam, Assistant for Economy and Development.
He added that this activity has an extraordinary economic effect.
"Hotels in Purbalingga all shot up and were fully booked. Hopefully this will boost tourist visits to Purbalingga, not only this year but also in the future," he said.
Sumarno emphasized that events like Slamet Trail Run are a new way to promote a healthy lifestyle while introducing the natural beauty of Central Java.
"Trail running is not just a sport; through this event, the Central Java Provincial Government wants to promote healthy living patterns and foster a love for nature," he explained.
He added that one important factor for the success of such an event is the support of the communities along the route.
"Our friends in Purbalingga need to pay attention that what runners expect in a running event is whether the communities they pass through welcome them or not, give encouragement; this impresses the runners. If a runner passes through an area where the people are curt, indifferent, well, they won't come back," he said with a laugh.
Presence of Professional and International Runners
The event was also attended by Rizki Dwi Kurniawan, an experienced Indonesian trail runner on the international stage, who competed in the 25K category alongside Regional Secretary Sumarno. Meanwhile, four Zimbabwean students from Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto participated in the 5K and 14K categories, adding an international flavor to the event.
With support from the government, community, and running clubs, Slamet Trail Run 2025 became a symbol of the rise of Central Java's sport tourism. This event wasn't just about who was fastest to the finish line, but about how sports, nature, and local spirit could run in harmony towards a healthier and more sustainable future.
