Kylian Mbappe has cemented his status as the new icon of French Football. His two goals in the 3-1 victory over Senegal during the opening match of 2026 World Cup Group I did not only secure his team's win, but also carved out new history. With these two additional goals, Mbappe has officially become the all-time top goalscorer for the France National Team.

The Real Madrid forward now holds 58 goals for Les Bleus, surpassing the previous record set by Olivier Giroud who stood at 57 goals.

This achievement is even more remarkable as Mbappe accomplished this at just 27 years old. Since making his international debut in 2017, he required only 99 matches to reach this 58 goal tally for the national side.

From the talented young prodigy who captured global attention at the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe has now grown into both a leader and the symbol of Les Bleus' Golden Generation.

This historic night began with France struggling to break down Senegal's defence. However, Mbappe proved the difference when he opened the scoring for his side in the 66th minute with a powerful strike that Senegal Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy failed to stop.

Mbappe's goal marked the turning point for France, who then took full control of the match. Bradley Barcola extended the lead in the 82nd minute, before Senegal pulled one back through Ibrahim Mbaye in stoppage time.

Just as Senegal began to build hope of an equaliser, Mbappe once again demonstrated his world class quality. Less than one minute after Mbaye's goal, he netted his second of the game to seal the 3-1 victory, and in doing so etched his name permanently into French football history books.

This new national team record is not the only milestone Mbappe is currently chasing. The 27 year old forward is now closing in on the all-time top goalscorer record for the entire history of the FIFA World Cup.

Having represented France at three World Cup tournaments in 2018, 2022 and 2026, Mbappe has now scored 14 goals from 15 tournament appearances. This tally puts him level with German legend Gerd Muller on the all-time World Cup goalscorers list.

Mbappe needs just three more goals to overtake the record held by another German great, Miroslav Klose, who remains the current all-time World Cup top goalscorer with 16 goals from 24 matches.

This opportunity is well within reach, as France still have two remaining group stage matches against Iraq and Norway. Should Les Bleus progress deep into the tournament, Mbappe's chances of breaking this world record will only increase further.

The impressive performance he delivered in this opening match also sends a strong signal that Mbappe is once again operating at peak form. With his finishing touch remaining sharp, he is not only France's main hope to defend their world title, but also the clear leading candidate to claim the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot.
