Monterrey – The Sweden national team opened their 2026 World Cup Group F campaign in extremely impressive fashion. The squad coached by Graham Potter secured a dominant 5-1 victory over Tunisia at BBVA Stadium, Monterrey, Mexico on Monday (15/6/2026). This win immediately placed Sweden at the top of the provisional Group F Standings with three collected points.

Domination From The Opening Minute
Sweden immediately showed their quality as soon as the first half whistle was blown. Relying on their lethal Premier League strike duo Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden took an early lead in the 7th minute. After Gyokeres' shot was blocked by Montassar Talbi inside the box, the loose ball fell to Yasin Ayari. The Brighton midfielder fired an elegant curling effort into the top corner, out of reach of Goalkeeper Abdelmouhib Chamakh.

This lead only boosted the Scandinavian squad's confidence. Another neat attacking combination came together in the 30th minute: Gyokeres controlled the ball on his chest before playing a perfect through ball for Isak. The Liverpool forward calmly evaded the Tunisian backline before slotting the ball home, extending Sweden's lead to 2-0.

Tunisia Mounted A Brief Fightback
Led by head coach Sabri Lamouchi, Tunisia attempted to battle back into the fixture. Shortly before half time, Hannibal Mejbri delivered an accurate cross which Omar Rekik converted with a headed finish at the far post. This 43rd minute goal cut the deficit to 2-1, keeping the Carthage Eagles' hopes alive going into the half time break.

Sweden Ran Riot In The Second Half
After the interval, Sweden reclaimed full control of the match. Tunisia's hopes of an equaliser collapsed in the 60th minute, after captain Ellyes Skhiri made a fatal defensive error and lost possession inside his own final third. An in-form Isak played a perfectly weighted assist for Gyokeres, who comfortably scored Sweden's third goal.

Holding a 3-1 lead did not cause Sweden to ease off their attacking pressure. Manager Graham Potter's decision to rotate players proved a masterstroke. Just ten seconds after entering the pitch to replace Jesper Karlstrom, Mattias Svanberg found the net in the 84th minute, finishing off a pulled back cross from Isak.

Sweden's goal rout was completed in style by Yasin Ayari during second half stoppage time (90+6'). From approximately 20 metres out, Ayari unleashed a thunderous strike that Chamakh was unable to react to, completing his personal brace and sealing the final 5-1 scoreline.

Standings Ramifications
This commanding victory puts Sweden top of Group F on three points, ahead of Netherlands and Japan who shared a single point each following their drawn opening match. This result serves as valuable momentum for Sweden ahead of their upcoming fixture against the Netherlands on 20 June.
