The three 2026 World Cup Host Nations have kicked off their runs at the world's biggest Football tournament with mixed results. Mexico and the United States successfully secured wins in their opening group stage matches, while Canada had to settle for a shared point in front of their home supporters.
Mexico became the first host side to catch the spotlight, claiming a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the Group A opening fixture at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, early Friday WIB. The match played out heated and full of drama, marked by three straight red cards.
El Tri opened their lead through Julian Quinones in the first half, before Raul Jimenez sealed the win with the side's second goal after the break. Despite losing Cesar Montes to a red card during stoppage time, Mexico managed to hold their lead until the final whistle blew.

Without Alphonso Davies, Canada will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
2026 World Cup: Group D Becomes the Arena of Tight Competition Between 4 Different Confederations
This win puts Mexico at the top of the provisional Group A Standings with three points. The result also marks an ideal start for Javier Aguirre's squad, who carry heavy expectations from the home public.
Canada meanwhile failed to follow Mexico's winning start. Playing at BMO Field, Toronto early Saturday WIB, Jesse Marsch's side could only record a 1-1 Draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Canada actually played aggressively from the first minute and controlled the flow of the match. However it was Bosnia-Herzegovina who struck first, with Jovo Lukic heading home from Sead Kolasinac's cross in the 21st minute.
Trailing by one goal, Canada upped their attacking intensity in the second half. Their efforts finally paid off when Cyle Larin scored the equaliser in the 78th minute, finishing off a feed from Promise David.
The 1-1 scoreline held until the end of the match. Despite failing to claim a win, Canada still collected one point. For the time being they sit joint top of Group B alongside Bosnia-Herzegovina ahead of the group's remaining fixtures.
Over in Group D, the United States delivered the most convincing performance out of the three host nations. Playing at SoFi Stadium, California, the Stars and Stripes dismantled Paraguay with a dominant 4-1 scoreline.
The United States took their opening lead via an own goal from Damian Bobadilla, before AS Monaco forward Folarin Balogun grabbed attention with a first half brace. Paraguay managed to pull one goal back through Mauricio after the break.
But the United States confirmed their big win when Gio Reyna scored a spectacular strike in stoppage time. The 4-1 result underlined the full match dominance of Mauricio Pochettino's side.
With three points collected, the United States lead the provisional Group D standings.
While both Mexico and the United States currently sit top of their respective groups, the competition remains very much open. Canada also still holds strong chances to improve their standing in their upcoming matches.
With their differing opening match results, the three 2026 World Cup hosts have already given an early glimpse of their tournament ambitions.
Mexico and the United States have sent a strong warning signal to their rivals, while Canada still has hard work ahead to turn their single opening point into enough momentum to advance to the knockout stages.
