Indonesia's hopes of claiming the men's singles title at the Australian Open 2026 are wide open. Two young Indonesian shuttlers, Alwi Farhan Alhasny and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, have advanced to the semi-finals of this BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament held at Quaycentre, Sydney, Australia.

This success for the pair is not only encouraging news for Indonesian Badminton, it also proves that the athlete regeneration programme run by the All Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) is starting to deliver positive results.

Alwi and Ubed have put on impressive performances throughout the tournament. Both eliminated tough opponents to lock in their semi-final positions, keeping alive the prospect of an all-Indonesian Men's Singles final.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo assessed that this achievement reflects positive progress for Indonesia's young athletes on the global stage.

"Alongside improvements to technical ability, competitive experience from competing across various international tournaments also plays a vital role in forging a champion mentality and competitive strength for Indonesia's young athletes," Okki stated in an official release on Saturday.

Alwi was the first Indonesian player to secure a semi-final berth. He defeated Taiwanese representative Lee Chia Hao in the Quarter Final with scores of 21-18, 21-15.

This win marks Alwi's best career result at the Australian Open. At the previous year's tournament, he was knocked out at the Quarter Final stage.

Shortly after, Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah matched his teammate's progress. The shuttler, commonly known as Ubed, eliminated Malaysian competitor Justin Hoh.

Ubed barely allowed his opponent any chance to settle into the match. With aggressive, confident play, he closed out the contest in only 38 minutes.

The straight games victory, with scores 21-7, 21-13, booked Ubed his semi-final spot. He will face Chinese men's singles player Dong Tian Yao in the next round.

If both Alwi and Ubed can win their semi-final matches, they will not only reach the tournament final - they will also deliver an all-Indonesian men's singles final.
