The race in 2026 World Cup Group A has been blown wide open after the Czech Republic national team were held to a 1-1 Draw by South Africa in their Group A fixture at Atlanta Stadium, United States. The Czech Republic took an early lead, before South Africa equalised from the penalty spot.
With this result, both the Czech Republic and South Africa remain firmly in contention to progress to the knockout stages.
Straight from the opening whistle, the Czech Republic immediately pressed on the attack. Their pressure paid off in the 6th minute, as Michal Sadilek broke the deadlock after latching onto a through ball inside the penalty area. The Czech midfielder's powerful left-footed strike could not be stopped by South African Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

South Africa did not sit back passively. The side nicknamed Bafana Bafana gradually found their match rhythm and began creating a series of dangerous scoring chances.
In the 14th minute, Oswin Appollis hit a volley that deflected off a Czech defender, nearly wrong-footing Goalkeeper Matej Kovar - but the Czech goal remained secure.
The Czech Republic's 1-0 lead held unchanged going into the half-time break.
As the second half commenced, the Czech Republic pushed to double their advantage, while South Africa chased an equalising goal.
Drama unfolded in the 83rd minute. South Africa were awarded a penalty after Thapelo Maseko's shot struck the hand of a Czech Republic player inside the penalty area.
Appointed penalty taker Teboho Mokoena executed the kick perfectly. The South African midfielder fired a powerful shot into the right side of the goal, well out of Matej Kovar's reach.
1-1 stood as the final result for both sides. This single point keeps both teams' qualification hopes alive.
For their next fixtures, the Czech Republic will face Mexico, while South Africa will look to secure their spot in the next round when they meet South Korea.
