Bengkulu is once again preparing to host one of its largest and most highly anticipated annual cultural events. Tabut Festival 2026 does not only serve as an important occasion for local communities to welcome the Islamic New Year of 1 Muharram, but also continuously reinforces its position as the region's premier tourist attraction.

The Ministry of Tourism assesses that the Tabut Festival holds a critical role in introducing Bengkulu's rich Cultural Heritage to wider audiences. Blending historical values, tradition, arts, and Creative Economy, this festival stands as a prime example of how local culture can develop into a powerful tourism magnet.

"Through the Tabut Festival, we aim to further elevate Bengkulu's tourism reputation by delivering a high-quality event that will become a strong draw for both Domestic Visitors and international tourists," stated Hafiz Agung Rifai, Acting Deputy for Event Organizer Development at the Ministry of Tourism, in an official announcement from Jakarta.

This festival is scheduled to take place from 16 to 25 June 2026 at the Bengkulu City Sports Centre Grounds.

Every year, thousands of local residents and tourists gather to witness a series of traditional ceremonies imbued with profound historical and religious meaning.

The Tabut Festival carries long historical roots. This tradition originated from the historic events at Karbala, Iraq, held to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, in 680 CE. The practice was later brought to Bengkulu by Muslim migrant workers of Indian descent during the British colonial era.

Over time, this tradition underwent acculturation with local Bengkulu culture. While the core religious values are preserved, it evolved into a broader cultural expression that has become an integral part of Bengkulu community identity.

Across the ten-day event, the Tabut Festival will present a full sequence of traditional rituals and processions: starting with the Prayer for Safety, Farewell Ceremony for Rajo Agung, Sacred Soil Collection, Duduk Penja, Consecration Rite, Penja Procession, Sorban Procession, Gam Ceremony, Tabut Ascent Ritual, Grand Tabut Parade, Soja Rite, Tabut Immersion, and concluding with the Closing Prayer.

Each procession carries its own distinct atmosphere and offers a unique Cultural Experience for visiting tourists.

The Tabut Festival has once again been included in the 2026 Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) flagship programme run by the Ministry of Tourism.

Inclusion of this festival on the national events calendar is expected to improve event delivery standards while generating greater economic impact for local communities.

This marks the sixth consecutive year the Tabut Festival has been part of the Karisma Event Nusantara programme. Carrying the theme "Vibrance of Muharram", the event will be enlivened by various traditional Bengkulu artistic and cultural performances.

One of the most highly anticipated highlights is the traditional Bengkulu Dhol drum performance. Visitors can also enjoy the Tabut Creative Dance, as well as indigenous folk games such as Ikan Ikan and Telong Telong, all part of the region's preserved cultural heritage.

Beyond arts and cultural programming, Tabut Festival 2026 will also provide dedicated space for creative economy practitioners and Local MSMEs. Various supporting activities will be held to enrich the visitor experience while stimulating local economic activity.

For tourists seeking an authentic encounter with Indonesia's cultural richness, the Tabut Festival offers far more than mere entertainment. This event carries living historical narratives, cultural values, and the spirit of communal solidarity that remains thriving within Bengkulu society to this day.
