Tottenham Hotspur secured their place in the English top flight for next season after claiming a crucial 1-0 victory over Everton on the final matchweek of the Premier League 2025/26 campaign at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This result also confirmed West Ham United's relegation to the Championship, as they failed to escape the drop zone.

Spurs' sole winning goal was scored by Joao Palhinha late in the first half. The three points lifted Roberto De Zerbi's side to a 17th placed finish with 41 points, holding a two point buffer over West Ham who sat directly below them in the table.

For Tottenham, this victory served as a last-ditch rescue mission, after they were forced to battle right until the final round of fixtures to guarantee their status in England's highest Football division.

West Ham meanwhile were forced to swallow the bitter reality of relegation, despite winning their own final match of the season.

Everton concluded the campaign in 13th position, ending the season with a total of 49 points.

Match Report

Playing in front of their home supporters, Spurs took an aggressive approach right from the opening minute. The side knew only an outright win would guarantee their Premier League safety, without having to rely on results from other fixtures.

Conor Gallagher registered the first threat of the game with a strike that drifted wide of the target. Shortly afterwards, Kevin Danso also tried his luck, though his effort failed to trouble the Everton goal.

Joao Palhinha pushed forward to unleash a long range effort, but the ball sailed over the visitors' crossbar.

Tottenham maintained their dominance through the entire first half. Their sustained pressure finally paid off just before the half time break, in the 42nd minute.

From a dead ball situation, Palhinha met the delivery with a header that struck the goalpost. The Portuguese midfielder reacted first to the rebound to fire home, Putting Tottenham 1-0 ahead.

Palhinha's goal sent the stadium roaring, as news came in simultaneously that West Ham had taken the lead against Leeds United.

As the second half commenced, Everton began to push forward more boldly and enjoyed greater ball possession. Even so, the visiting side struggled to create clear cut chances to break through the Spurs defence.

Tottenham Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky faced almost no serious threats on his goal until the closing stages of the match.

Tension peaked during Injury time when Everton worked an opening for Tyrique George. Antonin Kinsky produced a critical match-saving stop however, to keep Tottenham's narrow lead intact.

The final whistle was met with jubilant celebrations from the home supporters. The 1-0 victory was sufficient to confirm Tottenham had avoided relegation.

Elsewhere on the final matchday, West Ham actually recorded a convincing 3-0 win over Leeds United, with second half goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson.

This result was still not enough to save The Hammers however, who finished the season in 18th place with 39 points.

This relegation brings an end to West Ham's long unbroken run in the Premier League, after 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight following their 2012 promotion. They will drop down to the Championship alongside Burnley and Wolves.
