South Jakarta has once again proven itself as the most popular region for domestic tourists visiting the Indonesian capital. Among the vast range of destinations available across Jakarta, this area remains the primary draw thanks to its combination of culinary attractions, family recreation spaces, lifestyle hubs, and business districts.

Latest data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of DKI Jakarta shows that throughout May 2026, 27.54 percent of all domestic tourist journeys within Jakarta selected South Jakarta as their main destination. This figure places the region in first position, ahead of the five other administrative cities in the capital.

Head of DKI Jakarta BPS, Kadarmanto, stated that South Jakarta's dominance is not a recent phenomenon. This area has retained its position as the most preferred destination for several consecutive months.

"South Jakarta remained the favourite destination for domestic tourists in May 2026. This position is consistently held, as South Jakarta also led visitor numbers during the previous month and the month before that," stated Kadarmanto.

So what makes South Jakarta so uniquely attractive for domestic visitors?

One core factor is the concentration of diverse destinations within a single geographic area. Tourists are able to access culinary experiences, shopping facilities and family recreation without travelling long distances between locations.

Kadarmanto highlighted that areas such as Blok M are among the biggest draws, widely known as a perennially busy culinary hub. Meanwhile, Ragunan Wildlife Park continues to be the most popular choice for family outings.

"South Jakarta is renowned for its food scene particularly around Blok M, its tourist destinations including Ragunan Wildlife Park, and its established economic and business districts," he explained.

Beyond dedicated tourist sites, South Jakarta hosts a high concentration of corporate headquarters and commercial zones. This profile means the area receives large numbers not only of leisure tourists, but also business travellers who use their free time to explore nearby attractions.

Central Jakarta ranked second with a 21.65 percent share of domestic visitor trips, followed by East Jakarta (18.76 percent), West Jakarta (16.04 percent), North Jakarta (15.24 percent), and the Thousand Islands (0.77 percent).

Growing visitor interest in South Jakarta runs parallel with overall growth in tourist arrivals to the capital.

BPS recorded 8.82 million total domestic tourist trips to Jakarta during May 2026. This represents a 4.83 percent increase from the prior month, and a 6.97 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year.

At the same time, Jakarta residents are also travelling more frequently. In May 2026, residents of the capital made 9.51 million outbound tourist trips, marking an 8.87 percent month-on-month increase and 12.70 percent annual growth.

South Jakarta's consistent position as the most preferred destination confirms that urban tourism continues to hold very strong appeal.
