A major challenge awaits Roberto De Zerbi since officially taking charge of Tottenham Hotspur. Arriving during a crisis, the Italian manager bears heavy responsibility to keep Spurs in the Premier League next season.

De Zerbi will make his debut when Tottenham face Sunderland on Sunday, 12 April. This match could mark a turning point or deepen the pressure.

Spurs' current condition is far from ideal. They haven't secured a single league win throughout 2026 and recorded only two victories since 26 October 2025.

The situation worsened after their UEFA Champions League elimination, losing 5-7 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16.

De Zerbi becomes the third manager this season following Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.

Tudor lasted merely 44 days with seven matches, highlighting the instability in Spurs' dressing room.

Nevertheless, De Zerbi refuses to compare himself to predecessors.

“I don't consider myself better than Frank or Tudor – both excellent coaches. I simply aim to bring my style, character, personality and strength to achieve our current priority target,” he stated on the club's official website Saturday.

Tottenham currently sit 18th in the relegation zone, trailing West Ham United above them by just two points. Victory over Sunderland would offer temporary relief by lifting them to 17th.

Pressure extends beyond league position. Historically, Spurs rarely face relegation.

Since 1950, they've dropped from the top flight only once (1977-78 season). This history intensifies De Zerbi's burden to avoid repeating it.

Amid difficulties, the coach remains optimistic.

“I'm proud and happy to be here. I must thank Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange for their tremendous trust,” he said.

With limited preparation time, the former Brighton boss emphasized quickly diagnosing team issues. He also stressed supporters' crucial role in overcoming the crisis.

All eyes are now on De Zerbi. Can he reverse Spurs' fortunes, or will he be engulfed by deepening turmoil?
