The Premier League title race for the 2025/26 season has intensified after Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-1 at Etihad Stadium. This result narrows City's gap with Arsenal on the table to three points.

Arsenal remains at the top of the standings after matchweek 33. However, the loss to City has made The Gunners' position less comfortable.

The Gunners have collected 70 points from 33 matches. Meanwhile, Manchester City climbed to second place with 67 points, growing increasingly confident about maintaining their title chances this season.

The situation becomes more intriguing as the team coached by Pep Guardiola still has one game in hand.

If they manage to defeat Burnley on Thursday, April 23, City could equal Arsenal's points tally and even take over the top spot through superior goal difference.

The momentum from beating Arsenal clearly gives City significant capital. Conversely, Arsenal now faces pressure as they cannot afford to drop many more points in the remaining matches.

Erling Haaland Manchester City's Match Hero

In Sunday's March 20, 2026 evening match, City took the lead in the 16th minute through Rayan Cherki's individual effort.

The young midfielder drove into the penalty box, bypassed several Arsenal players, and unleashed a left-footed shot that David Raya couldn't save.

However, the home side's lead lasted only two minutes. Arsenal equalized in the 18th minute.

City Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's attempted clearance struck Kai Havertz and went into the net, making it 1-1 and opening up the game.

Approaching halftime, Arsenal nearly turned things around, but Havertz's chance in front of goal was blocked by City defender Cristhian Mosquera.

Entering the second half, Arsenal became more aggressive. Havertz had a one-on-one opportunity against Donnarumma, but the Italian keeper made a crucial save. Eberechi Eze's shot also threatened without resulting in a goal.

Amidst opponent pressure, City scored the decisive winner in the 65th minute when Erling Haaland converted Nico O'Reilly's pass.

In the remaining time, Arsenal kept pressing, including through set-piece situations. Havertz's header presented one of the best chances, but Donnarumma remained alert. The final whistle confirmed Manchester City's 2-1 victory.
