The departure of Javier Mascherano from the head coach position at Inter Miami ushers in a new chapter. The Major League Soccer (MLS) club synonymous with Lionel Messi acted swiftly to appoint Guillermo Hoyos.

Mascherano announced his resignation for personal reasons on Tuesday night Western Indonesian Time via the club's official website. He ended his tenure marked by significant success.

Mascherano's decision comes just months after leading Inter Miami to its most glorious season in Club History.

“I have decided to end my term as head coach of Inter Miami," stated Mascherano.

"First, I want to thank the club for the trust placed in me, all the staff who are part of the organization for the collective work, and especially the players who allowed us to experience unforgettable moments."

Mascherano's departure contrasts sharply with his achievements. In his first season, the 41-year-old coach led Inter Miami to win two major trophies, including the club's first MLS Cup title and the Eastern Conference championship.

Under Mascherano's guidance, Inter Miami played explosively, scoring 101 goals across all competitions, including 20 goals in the playoff phase from a total of 58 matches.

Inter Miami also made history by becoming the first MLS team to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, while also recording a Historic Victory over a European club. An achievement previously unattained by any Concacaf club.

At the regional level, their journey was equally impressive. Reaching the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals and the Leagues Cup final demonstrated consistency across various competitions.

Managing Owner of the club, Jorge Mas, affirmed that Mascherano will always be an important part of the club's history.

Guillermo Hoyos Appointed Interim Coach

Inter Miami appointed Guillermo Hoyos as interim coach. Hoyos is not an unfamiliar name to Lionel Messi. He was a key figure during Messi's early career at Barcelona's academy, La Masia.

“He helped me a lot since I arrived at Barça. He was always there for me. He taught me many things and helped me reach the position I am in today,” revealed Messi.

Now, after a relationship spanning over two decades, the two are reunited in Miami.

Hoyos arrives not only bringing nostalgia but also extensive coaching experience across various countries, from Greece to South America.

Since last year, he has served as the director of Inter Miami's academy and sports before now stepping up to the head coach position temporarily.

Inter Miami's performance this season has been inconsistent. They suffered an early exit from the Concacaf Champions Cup and managed only two consecutive Draws in MLS.

Playing at their new home, Nu Stadium, hasn't yet proven to be a complete advantage, with the team currently stalled in third place in the Eastern Conference and 10th overall in the league Standings.

The Messi-Hoyos reunion brings new hope, at least until a permanent solution is found.
