Europe is increasingly solidifying its position as a global powerhouse in Golf Tourism. From the Algarve to the Scottish Highlands, a wave of world-class course construction, luxury resorts, and major tournaments is reshaping the map of Sports Travel.

The surge in tourist numbers forms the core foundation of this growth. Golf, once considered a niche activity, is evolving into a new economic engine, driven by sustained investment and growing interest in Sports Tourism across various European countries.

Data from tourism authorities shows Spain and Portugal recording significant growth, particularly from tourists arriving specifically for golf.

Economic Contribution of Golf Tourism in Spain

Destinations with year-round warm climates are experiencing increases in hotel occupancy rates and tourist spending through early 2026.

In the Costa del Sol region, known as the "Costa del Golf," dozens of courses are spread from Malaga to Marbella.

This area recorded its best tourism performance in recent years, with golf tourists staying longer and spending significantly more money than typical beach tourists.

Meanwhile, the Costa Blanca recorded an economic contribution from golf tourism reaching hundreds of millions of euros throughout 2024. This is leading developers to position golf courses as primary assets, not just supplementary facilities.

Overall, nearly 1.5 million foreign tourists came to Spain for sports purposes in 2024, contributing over one billion euros in spending. Golf is a major draw, particularly in Mediterranean regions.

The economic impact is also felt in Scotland. Events like The Open generate tens of millions of pounds in just one week, reinforcing the tournament's position as a driver of cross-sector tourism.

Algarve Leads Luxury Golf Resort Trend

In Portugal, the Algarve region is spearheading the luxury golf resort trend. This area combines world-class courses with five-star hotels and wellness facilities to attract international tourists.

One of the latest projects is Ombria Algarve, which opened an 18-hole course in 2023. The resort gained international recognition thanks to its sustainable design and integrated premium facilities.

Other destinations like Vilamoura are also continuously upgrading, leveraging International Awards to attract North American and Northern European markets.

Beyond southern Portugal, development is occurring in the north and along the Lisbon coast. New tournaments and upgraded facilities are expanding the national golf tourism map.

Italy and Scotland

In the Mediterranean, destinations like Tuscany in Italy are starting to blend golf tourism with culinary and wine tourism. Resorts such as Castiglion del Bosco are included in lists of the world's best golf destinations.

Meanwhile, Scotland is reinforcing its status as "the home of golf worldwide" with new projects like Cabot Highlands and the expansion of Trump International in Aberdeen.

Major tournaments remain the backbone of the promotional strategy, supported by governments and organizations like The R&A to ensure the sustainability of events into the next decade.

Behind this growth, new trends are emerging. Course development now emphasizes environmental sustainability and the overall tourist experience, including spa facilities, culinary offerings, and Family Activities.

With the expansion of Flight Routes and ongoing investment, European Golf Tourism is predicted to continue growing until the end of the decade.
