The red card proved disastrous for Barcelona as they hosted Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Quarter Finals of the Champions League 2025/26. Playing at Camp Nou on Thursday, April 9 early morning WIB, Barcelona fell 0-2.
Initially Barcelona dominated possession and controlled the game's tempo. Marcus Rashford even had two opportunities but failed to convert them into goals.
Momentum briefly favored the hosts when Rashford scored in the 17th minute after receiving a pass from Lamine Yamal. However, the goal was disallowed as Yamal was in an offside position.

Meanwhile, Atletico played patiently relying on counter-attacks. Julian Alvarez attempted threats but didn't seriously endanger Barcelona's goal.
The match's turning point came in the 44th minute. Young defender Pau Cubarsi was sent off after fouling Giuliano Simeone. Initially shown a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to red following VAR review.
Atletico immediately capitalized on the numerical advantage. Julian Alvarez successfully converted a Free kick during first-half stoppage time. The visitors led 1-0 at halftime.
Entering the second half, Barcelona continued dominating possession despite being down to 10 players. Yamal and Rashford built several attacks, but effectiveness remained their main issue.
Barcelona conceded again in the 70th minute. A cross from the left was met by substitute Alexander Sorloth who scored Atletico's second goal.
Barcelona tried to respond. Joao Cancelo's 77th-minute chance was saved by Goalkeeper Juan Musso, while Yamal's powerful shot also missed the target.
Until the final whistle, Atletico Madrid maintained their 2-0 lead. This result gives them a favorable position heading into next week's second leg at their home ground.
