The homecoming wave, typically synonymous with the tradition of returning to one's hometown, is transforming into experience-based journeys. During the 2026 Eid holiday, Indonesian Tourism displayed a more vibrant pulse, not merely the movement of people, but a shift towards tourist destinations.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, this year's Eid holiday momentum spurred an increase in travel while driving the national economy.
Data from the Ministry of Transportation recorded 147.55 million trips during the period of March 13-29, 2026. This figure exceeded the initial projection by 2.53 percent.

Of this total, around 12 percent, equivalent to 17.27 million people, chose to make their journeys tourism explorations.
This number increased by 6.3 percent compared to the previous year, signaling a shift in how society perceives holidays.
"However, this is an estimate; the actual data will naturally await BPS [Statistics Indonesia], as we collaborate with BPS to calculate the number of both domestic and foreign tourists," they stated.
From City Icons to Natural Landscapes
Amidst this surge in mobility, several destinations became major magnets. The Malioboro area in Yogyakarta remained a cultural hub that never sleeps.
In the capital city, tourist flows converged on Ancol, Monas (National Monument), and Ragunan Wildlife Park – public spaces offering a respite from urban density.
Meanwhile, the allure of history and spirituality also drew travelers. Semarang's Old Town, Al Jabar Mosque, and Demak Great Mosque became points where journeys met reflection.
On the other hand, natural landscapes like Pangandaran Beach, Sarangan Lake, and Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor offered experiences closer to nature.
This tourism movement significantly boosted tourism sector expenditure, rising from IDR 11.04 trillion in 2025 to IDR 19.86 trillion in 2026.
"This indicates a shift from household-based consumption to experience-based consumption, particularly in the tourism sector," said Ni Luh.
Priority Tourism Destinations Gain Momentum
The Ministry of Tourism also noted significant movement towards the 10 Priority Tourism Destinations (DPP). Destinations like Lake Toba, Borobudur Temple, Mandalika, Likupang, Wakatobi, Raja Ampat, and Bromo-Tengger-Semeru became the main axes of growth.
A total of 6.66 million movements were recorded towards these destinations, a 13.74 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, Regenerative Tourism Destinations (DPR) like Bali, Greater Jakarta, and the Riau Islands recorded a higher increase of up to 24.63 percent, with the Riau Islands surging sharply by 125.5 percent.
Raja Ampat experienced a 19.9 percent increase in visits, strengthening its position as one of the world's increasingly sought-after marine paradises.
Overall, estimated expenditure on travel to priority and regenerative destinations reached over IDR 12.27 trillion, accounting for about 61.8 percent of total national tourism spending during the Eid period.
Infrastructure, Services, and Tourism Experiences
To support this surge, the Ministry of Tourism activated various initiatives, including the "Halo Wonderful" information platform, the Proud to Travel in Indonesia (BBWI) campaign, and the Shop in Indonesia Only (BINA) program.
Additionally, creating Eid holiday travel packages, pushing for reductions in transportation ticket prices, and monitoring at 173 destination points were part of efforts to create safer and more comfortable journeys.
Surveillance against illegal levies was tightened, in collaboration with regional governments and law enforcement.
Eid 2026, ultimately, was not just about returning home, but about moving, exploring, and discovering new meaning in the journey.
