PSSI's confidence in John Herdman stems from his unique and solid track record. The federation believes he possesses a rare and fitting portfolio of experience to lead Indonesia's long-term national team project.
The English coach is noted as the only coach worldwide to successfully bring both men's and women's national teams from one country (Canada) to the FIFA World Cup.
- With the Canadian Women's Team, he won bronze medals at the 2012 & 2016 Olympics and qualified for the 2007 and 2011 World Cups.
- With the Canadian Men's Team, he ended a 36-year absence by leading them, spearheaded by Alphonso Davies, to the 2022 World Cup.
His coaching statistics are impressive. From 160 international matches managed, his win ratio reached 50.62%. His most significant contribution was elevating Canada's FIFA Ranking from 90th (2018) to its highest-ever position of 33rd in 2022.
Holistic Philosophy and Approach
John Herdman is known for his three-pillar philosophy: team spirit, tactical excellence, and team chemistry. His approach focuses not only on tactics but also on building team culture, trust, and a strong playing identity to optimize collective performance.
His experience extends beyond national teams. His career began developing systems in New Zealand before successfully leading the New Zealand and Canadian Women's Teams to historic achievements. His brief club-level stint with Toronto FC in 2023 also demonstrated positive impact, significantly improving the team's performance across various aspects.
Hopes for Garuda Squad
With extensive experience building teams from foundations to peak performance, John Herdman is expected to apply similar formulas for Indonesia. His appointment as Indonesian National Team Coach aims not for instant results but to establish sustainable structures, identity, and processes – targeting the 2030 World Cup.
His success in transforming Canada – not traditionally a World Football powerhouse – into a competitive team is the primary reason why a figure like John Herdman is seen as ideal to lead the Garuda squad's transformation.
