JakartaGelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) witnessed the heroic struggle of the Indonesian National Team in the FIFA Series 2026 Final against Bulgaria on Monday (March 30, 2026). Although they had to settle for finishing the tournament as runners-up after a narrow 0-1 defeat, the squad under John Herdman demonstrated their class as a new force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

Magical Atmosphere at Senayan
Since the afternoon, the Senayan area had transformed into a sea of red and white. Tens of thousands of supporters from across the archipelago packed the stands, providing relentless support despite rain pouring down on the capital. Extraordinary loyalty was shown by supporters who traveled far from West Java, and by the presence of Public Figures like singer Fitri Carlina, who headed straight to the stadium moments after landing from her Umrah Pilgrimage in Jeddah.

The presence of iconic figures, from a supporter dressed as Gatot Kaca to the Persib Bandung legend, Atep, further emphasized that this match was not just a Football game, but a stage for national pride.

Dominance Halted by VAR
Indonesia actually applied pressure from the first whistle. With ball possession reaching 71 percent, the Garuda Squad repeatedly troubled Bulgaria's defensive line through wing acceleration and set-piece schemes.

However, the momentum shifted in the 35th minute. The referee decided to review the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after an incident involving Kevin Diks and Zdravko Dimitrov in the penalty box. A penalty was awarded to Bulgaria, and Marin Petkov, stepping up as the executor, successfully completed his task in the 38th minute, beating the Indonesian Goalkeeper.

Fight Until the Final Minute
Entering the second half, the match intensity heated up. Indonesia nearly equalized through a golden opportunity from Ole Romeny and a powerful header by Rizky Ridho, but Lady Luck wasn't on their side as the ball only struck the crossbar.

The match was also marked by a flurry of yellow cards due to hard play from both teams. Justin Hubner (39') received a yellow card, while on the opposing side, Martin Georgiev and goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov were also booked by the referee for their efforts to contain Indonesia's aggression. Until the final whistle blew, the 0-1 scoreline remained in Bulgaria's favor.

Optimism Behind the Defeat
After the match, coach John Herdman expressed his pride in his team's progress. Although they failed to make history as champions this time, John Herdman is optimistic that the foundation built is very strong for the future.

Support also came from Edi Mulyadi, father of Emil Audero, who continued to encourage all the players. For the supporters, this narrow penalty loss does not diminish their pride. Indonesia has shown bravery, dominated play against a European team, and proven that the Garuda is now flying higher.
