Janice Tjen's journey at the Charleston Open now narrows to one goal, the singles sector. With her doubles run halted, full focus becomes key for a resurgence.

Earlier, the Indonesian Women's Tennis Player fell in the doubles sector alongside her compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi.

Competing in the first round of the WTA 500 event in Charleston, USA, on Wednesday (WIB), Janice/Aldila couldn't overcome the top-seeded pair Aleksandra Krunic/Zhang Shuai, losing 6-7(3), 5-7.

The match was tight from the start. In the first set, the Croatian/Chinese duo tried to dominate play through their strong serves.

Krunic/Shuai led by one ace and successfully landed 71.8 percent of their first serves.

While Janice/Aldila committed two double faults, Krunic/Shuai converted their sole break point opportunity.

They then went on to win seven out of ten tie-break points to seize the advantage.

A comeback effort emerged in the second set. Janice/Aldila led with two aces and recorded 66.7 percent of points from second serve returns.

However, the opponents' consistency remained the difference until the match concluded after one hour and 33 minutes.

Now, Janice's attention is fully fixed on singles. Seeded twelfth, she received a bye in the first round, an advantage for more thorough preparation.

In the second round, Janice, currently ranked world number 41, will face home player McCartney Kessler at 10:00 PM WIB.

Kessler arrives with high confidence. The world number 53 player just eliminated her compatriot Elvina Kalieva with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.

She also recorded a breakthrough year in 2025, winning the WTA 250 Hobart and Nottingham tournaments, and securing the WTA 1000 Montreal doubles title alongside Coco Gauff.

For Janice, this duel is more than just a second-round match. It's an opportunity to halt her negative trend after early exits in her last three tournaments: WTA 500 Merida, WTA 1000 Indian Wells, and WTA 1000 Miami.
